I found the Dismas Hardy books a few months ago and knew immediately that this author was going to go on my must read everything written by the man list. I've enjoyed the first 12 books in the series, some more than others. But this one - Dismas Hardy Book 13 - raises the bar of excellence dramatically. The book is definitely stay up all night because you simply MUST see what happens next quality. And you would think that given the author's ability to bring fascinating bits of knowledge about police work, legal and judicial practice, human nature and criminal behavior together in exciting storylines that after 12 books there couldn't really be much more that could surprise. You would be wrong. This story about a "simple" murder case turns out to involve illegal marijuana trade, old murders and robberies, political manipulations, money laundering and the basic deficiencies in human nature that allows all those issues to become one of Dismas Hardy's most interesting defense cases yet.
San Fransisco never looks very good in the Dismas Hardy series, but it steps over all the boundaries this time - with the help of a federal US Attorney who puts politics and ambition ahead of justice. He is joined in the abuse of power by an equally ambitious and somewhat unethical ADA and a fairly stupid police detective who ignores boundaries. There was a fascinating section about investigating money laundering from which I learned some interesting details (especially fun since my career was auditing for the federal government). This book, like all of the author's novels, keeps a fast pace, with just enough humor to keep you happily entertained, and leads you to what is always a surprising conclusion. I have yet to figure out "who really did it" until the final few chapters. And the one thing that I will say about this author which is especially true in this book, is that the end is always believable.
So, if you want to learn a little about the legal system, human nature, the minds of murderers, and a world of secrets that always eventually come to light - buy this book. Just make sure you set aside a lot of reading time because you will not want to put this down until you reach the end.
