MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD:
The author goes to great length to describe how the characters are dressed, but if you're not literate in late Medieval fashion, you're still clueless as to what people really look like. I have no idea if there is a web site the author could refer readers to or not, but it would be a help. The author does provide a link to help translate Scots words, but it doesn't take the place of a glossary, and in this volume she threw in some Low German, which I luckily was able to understand. In this book, "pig" is a container or jar.
However, my chief complaint is the ending-- it's like a bad Hollywood movie or television program... a main character figures it out, then tells nobody where he/she/it is going, takes no one with him/her/it, not even the dog, goes unarmed to, confront the villian with no "backup," and ends up having to be rescued in the nick of time. Additionally, a couple sub-plots are left dangling, and the reader has no idea if or how they were resolved.
Don't get me wrong, I like this series very much, and it's a nice change from most Medieval mysteries which are usually set in England. The author obviously has a great command of the subject material, and it's an interesting reminder that with a population of 5,000, Glasgow was considered to be a city, and most of the items of everyday life were made right there or nearby. Luxuries were imported. I also note that Scottish law was similar to English law, but there were definite differences. For example, a woman convicted of murder was drowned, rather than hanged.
Being laid up with an injured back has given me the opportunity to re-read most of the books, and I recommend it to others; there is a large and fairly complex cast of characters, some of whom grow from one book to the next, and along with a glossary I'd very much appreciate a list of characters.
Again, I like this series very much, and look forward to future installments.
