The life of a Scout troopReviewed in the United States on 14 October 2018
Anyone who has been a Scout leader knows that it takes a village to support the young men in their quest through the program. What isn’t often known is all of the experiences, time, growth and love that come along with that. Mark does a great job of bringing the reader with his troop for the journey through time as they advance in rank, age and maturity, while also reflecting on his own changes. Recommended reading for anyone who wants to be a leader, learn about Scouting or just find out what it’s like for a group to grow and develop together as friends.
Motivation for youth leadersReviewed in the United States on 29 April 2013
Scouting is promoted as an opportunity to transform boys into versatile gentlemen. Initially, the author sought the nurturing environment of scouting with expectations that his son would develop the characteristics of a Boy Scout; the book describes his son's development. However, readers may note, the author was also transformed. Thrust into a position of leadership, the author becomes a better father and creates lasting friendships with fellow parents, thereby motivating Pieces of Eight: My Time with Troop 63. The inspiration provided by this book is not exclusive to scouting, but is potentially applicable to all youth leaders.
