Product description

Product Description

It is 1931 and the world is still reeling from the aftermath of the Wall Street Crash.

Polly Morland has returned to Morland Place, saving it from financial ruin. Her plans to change things are met with resistance, however, and she must prove her mettle in a man's world. Jack, war hero and family man, knows that he must make a change for the sake of those he holds dear so when an opportunity arises that would take him back to York, he seizes it with both hands.

In London, Robert is bored with his office job and seeks something grander. Fatherless and dealing with the repercussions of his family's bankruptcy, he must make his own way now that he has been left to the mercy of the world. His sister Charlotte, also frustrated with her life and sure that she will never receive an offer of marriage, longs for something different as well.

As the years roll by, the threat of another war hangs in the air and when King Edward VIII takes to the throne, things seem to be on the brink of change once more. But like a phoenix rising up from the ashes, the Morlands prove yet again that they will emerge from whatever they must face stronger than ever before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping to the end 4 December 2014

Thanks to the characters' endearing personalities and the depiction of the changes in society in the 1930's, The Phoenix is gripping to the last page, as were the 34 previous volumes that I devoured in a steady gallop. But will there be more? The ending gives me hope! I intend to start again from volume 1 now, so that I can really take in all the fascinating details of ordinary people's lives through the ages and how private citizens affect and are affected by the decisions of those in power. Plus the cracking love stories, of course!
5.0 out of 5 stars Good to visit with old friends 19 October 2013

If you've been immersed in this long running series, then references back to old characters in earlier books may, as it did for me, bring a smile to your face. In this book, for example, our famous plastic sergeon, repairer of fire and other disfigurements, finds himself working in a hospital that is spoken of pejoratively as a "beauty hospital". Readers of the series will remember that "Beauty" was the moniker of his well loved and powerful father. I enjoyed greatly Cyntia Harrod-Eagles keeping alive, in direct and oblique ways, major characters from earlier books. And, of course, keeping the theme of Morland Place forever: as it expands and contracts, has different masters, workers and residents, as though it was a living entity, while different generations, some with greater success than others, pass through. As always, she draws her characters exceedingly well, making them multidimensional, and successfully sets them within the context of time and place. (Here, she creates characters within the context of the Great Depression.) She gives the story line sufficient turns to hold one's interest in the current book and sets the stage for you wanting to known what happens in the next book. I look forward to Book 36 as we move towards WW II and it's impact on the extended family of Morland Place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally addictive books! Great historical novels! 8 November 2013

I have all of the previous books and I anxiously await the next book to find out what is happening with the Morland family. I have even gotten my 87 year-old mother hooked on this series. The author does a wonderful job researching the historical era of each book, and I become totally mesmerized in the books. I usually try to hold off reading the books for when I am on vacation and I can read as long as I wish. These books are so difficult to put down. I am now waiting for the next book as I am addicted to Harrod-Eagles writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars My thoughts on the Morland Dynasty 11 October 2013

I'm about to purchase no 35 of the Morland Dynasty and I was interested to read the review below. Having read the previous 34 books and enjoying most I do feel the last three books were rushed and lacking in detail. At times I thought another person had been at the keyboard.
I have downloaded the three Kirov books and Anna so far lives up to expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars The final book in the series, so far! 5 February 2015

Devastating, that this is the last book in the Series! (So far, at least). Ms. Harrod-Eagles is a wonderful storyteller and I became addicted to the Morland family story. I'm just hoping that the publisher will order several more books, as this one ended in the mid-1930's.
