2 stars deducted for not including the AC adapter and then charging again way too much for that. PetSafe hopefully feels embarrassed for displaying such blatant greed here.
Otherwise the product works great. One review stated that if you don't get the programming just right then you need to remove the batteries to reset it and start over. That isn't true, it's simple to setup and adjust without ever needing to reset it.
Another con is that sideways this thing can be tipped over no problem. If you have hangry cats, you need to build a box over this to keep it from being disturbed. If I could deduct more stars I would but leaving less than two will put my review in the ommittable list which I don't want.
If it was just way cheaper and the AC adapter was included, it would be a 5 star review.
Found this in Warehouse Deals Store. Arrived with previous owners kibble dust that I don't expect Amazon staff to clean-up, hence 4 stars. Otherwise works very well. Cat took to it right away. Instructions clear and easy to follow. Got this AC adapter > https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01JFZ8BO2/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2 < to power the feeder along with D cells for power outages. Machine is very quiet. The noise of the food hitting the metal bowl alerts kitty. Holds food enough for a couple of months in the hopper. Super easy to clean. Various user programs for feeding times and amounts of food. I looked on Amazon.com as well as Amazon.ca to see which feeder reviewed well to help a make purchase decision. There are many clones and lots of fails. This unit is very pricey but one of a few that got good reviews. I very much like that it can run from an adapter as well as batteries.
So according to other reviewers, once the cat looks at this as the source for food it stops bugging you to feed it. I hope that works as every night from 3 - 6am I have a visitor at the CLOSED bedroom door meowing.
UPDATE June 25, 2017 The Cat has really adapted to this feeder! The only time (of the four feedings he has per day/night) that he tries any meowing is the morning and at that it only a chirp now. Cat is almost clairvoyant as to when the food will dispense and will sometimes sit there minutes before feed time. The Cat has tested the security features of this feeder exhaustively to no avail!
This feeder is expensive... yes but like a car, you either pay for quality or you get what you pay for.
The power supply is not included... why remove a star when it is mentioned when you are buying it ? Just buy it and get over it !!
Fill the conveyor full BEFORE using it... this is normal as it is not a scale... it gives food per the conveyor space between each tooth! Again, it will vary a little in quantity as it does not have a scale !!! Be aware before buying it and do not lower the stars because of this !!
It says 2 years warranty which is again a very nice thing.
My cat uses bigger dental kibbles so this is perfect compared to other cheap products sold out there... again this is much more expensive but st least it works !!
For those who like to complain even after reading this, continue as you will probably never be happy on any products anyway, but for the others like me, enjoy this nice piece of engineering... make sure to buy the latest product and PLEASE READ THE MANUAL... all is in there.
What I did before giving it to the cat on the first use as a test of accuracy, I programmed 12 meals and calculated each one and compared all 12 on a piece of paper and it was pretty accurate.
If I could change one thing, I'd wish there was a way to reset these without removing the batteries. A simple on/off switch would do. As it is, when we got the second one I wanted them to be synchronized and the only way to perfectly do that was to pop the batteries out of the first, and then try to put them in both machines simultaneously. This was tricky, but doable. Then I just used both hands to set both machines at the same time. They're only a few seconds off of eachother now.
I also wish these came with the AC adapter. There's a place to plug them in, but the adapter is sold separately. I didn't realize that when I ordered the first one. It claims to have a one year battery life, though.
Neither of these complaints is enough to lower my rating. I still think these are fantastic. I've been using them for a couple of weeks now with no problems. Definitely recommended.
I bought the PetSafe to use for portion control to manually dispense 1/8 of a cup at will. Unfortunately the PetSafe feeder does not have this simple functionality. Only work for automatic feeding.
I returned it, but God Is was hoping for that to work. Now I have to go back to the boring task of weighting each portion.
It is a will built unit, it's the only conveyer belt feeder I can find. The LCD controls are outdated, no manual feed button and doesn't keep program in memory of you swap battery.
The same feeder with a better LCD controller would be awesome.
Little update: I figured out a way and it's free. I put 13gr in an empty pills container. I then draw a line and cut the container at that line. The narrow opening of a pill container is perfect, I get 13-14gr consistently.
The programming is easy, the food dispenses on time (roughly) and the slow feed option worked well for my dog's 1/2 cup portion (4x 1/8 cup feedings.) The stainless bowl is a great feature.
All in all, LOVE the feeder, and would buy again if I had a more suitable pet. But it was driving my poor dog crazy.
You need D batteries for it as is does not include an external adapter, however this is a good thing as it makes the feeder bottom-heavy.
First, as other reviewers have said it doesn't come with an A/C adaptor and, for the price, arguably it should. However, I do like the fact it runs of batteries as my outlet space is limited (I have the Drinkwell fountain plugged in at the only outlet). I do want to add that I purchased this feeder in April 2017, installed 4 "D" batteries (from Amazon Basics) and I only just replaced them this month (March 2019) so they have easily lasted me 2 years (probably longer, but I didn't want to risk it dying while I was away for a long weekend).
I have two cats, and have the feeder set to dispense the minimal amount (1/8th cup) four times a day (I then supplement with canned food too). Definitely a downside if you need less than 1/8th of a cup portions. However, I find these portion are reliable and haven't fluctuated much over the last 2 years. With my previous cat, who had dietary issues, I did use the slow feed mode which did dispense the food a bit slower than usual. Probably best for larger portions than 1/8th of a cup.
Very easy to disassemble and clean, much of it is dishwasher safe but I find it easiest just to soak it all in the sink (since the conveyor isn't dishwasher safe anyways).
The only drawback, and this is why it lost a star in my books, is the programming. It is rather straightforward (anyone who's every used a calculator can do this). However, it's not intuitive. The system locks automatically (why I have no idea), and to unlock you have to hold enter and up. To enter the programming mode you hold enter for 5 seconds. Then to clear the hopper it's enter and left. Good luck remembering all this when you go to clean it every couple of months. I have to constantly refer to the manual. Why they didn't make it a simpler control system in this day and age baffles me. But overall it is straightforward (just keep the manual handy).
For cats the hopper is huge, and I really only need to refill about once a month or less. I find the conveyor is fairly quiet, although the kibble is loud when it hits the steel bowl.
I would also say the price is now a bit ridiculous. When I bought it in 2017 there weren't a lot of feeders like this on the market. Now there are tonnes on Amazon, although I can't vouch for their quality they all hover around $100 for similar (or better) features. If you're looking for something simple and reliable and are willing to pay the cost, I would recommend.
