Product description

Product Description

Lucidly and beautifully written, PEACE IS EVERY STEP contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the reader already is - in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking in a park - and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices. The deceptively simple practices of PEACE IN EVERY STEP encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the 'mindness' into the mindful.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING 18 October 2014

Peace is Every Step has helped many of my friends and family members get through rough (or even smooth!) times in their lives. This book is a must-have if you are going through any kind of stressful situation or you are just looking for simple ways to live mindfully. It is organized in very short chapters which are perfect if you want to read one quick chapter a day and then think on it. The messages are easy to understand and provide such accessible wisdom compared to other books of this nature which can be ponderous, new-agey, or overly complicated. My life is better since this book came into my life, and I will never be without a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to heal yourself and be a part of a peaceful transformation of human kind 8 December 2014

With love and compassion for all Living Beings Thich Nhat Hahn teaches us how to implement mindfullness in our daily lives in order to take responsibility for ourselves and our planet.

Being a zen buddhist munk Thich Nhat Hanh shares great clarity and insight with simplicity and humility to kindly remind us all that in spite of differences we are not enemies by nature. We are interconnected flawed beings and the only way to heal our flaws and the suffering they sustain is by taking responsibility for your inner life. By embracing the dirt inside yourself as a vital medium for inner growth you plant a seed to forgive yourself and others. By healing yourself you take an active part in healing the outer world as well.

The key is practicing mindfull awareness. In a very down to earth fashion Thich Nhat Hahn provides specific simple pointers as well as lessons of the universe. He gently guides the reader towards greater understanding of what meditation is all about and ultimately a greater appreciation of life itself. It all starts by learning how to love your true self beyond your ego as this true self is a vital, inter-connected part of this world and it's beings.

I am in deep gratitude for the healing words and kind guidance of Thich Nhat Hahn. I can heartfully recommend the fundamentals of the mindfull practices recommended in this book. I find it to be working although I often slip due to my 'old programming'. It does not matter that much though so rather than complaining I simply do my best to practice. I breathe, smile and slowly walk the path my life of knowing I am doing good to myself and those around me when being present.

The writing may at times appear simplistic but the truth running beneath the words is undeniable and the seeds of self patience and tolerance will sprout within you if you embrace his teaching.

Buy this gem - read it with an open mind. I am grateful I did.

With disarmingly simple language the practices and concepts of his Buddhist training are explained in a way that is both simple and deep. Many of the folks who practice in this tradition (Plum Village tradition of Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh) read this book as a first introduction to his teaching. Highly recommended if you are interested in a practical introduction to Buddhism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suggestions as Simple as They Are Wise 25 May 2016

A classic collection of brief talks and short essays from the renowned Vietnamese monk. In many of them, Hanh begins by describing some typically mundane aspect of daily life – such as being interrupted by a ringing telephone, or being stopped at a red traffic light – and then offers a profoundly simple suggestion for transforming the way we typically respond to these everyday occurrences. Rather than experiencing them as frustrations, he suggests that we simply pay attention to them. The radical idea Hanh proposes is that we accept everything that happens to and around us as an invitation to be more fully present in each moment of our lives. In one of my favorite passages, he talks about washing dishes: “Not only do we do the dishes in order to have clean dishes, we also do the dishes just to do the dishes.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening! Mindfulness simply yet thoroughly explained 1 March 2008

Thich Nhat Hanh's book Peace is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life is an enlightening read!

The author does a great job of showing the inextricable connection between the mind, the body, and the environment. Mindfulness is an awareness of our living right now. It helps us to become and remain mentally and physically healthy and to live harmoniously in our symbiotic relationship with each other and our environment. Our survival on this planet depends upon it.

Hanh encourages us to be mindful in everything we do--for example, when we peel a tangerine eat it mindfully. He encourages us to feel the spray as we peel it. Smell the fragrance and feel the texture of fruit. Enjoy the taste and nourishment. Think of the mother of the fruit--the tree, its leaves, its blossoms and our connection with it and the environment.

The author encourages us to slow down, breathe, and live in the moment. Instead of being frustrated by the obstacles--red lights, traffic, layovers--that prevent us from getting from one place to another quickly, use those moments to practice Mindfulness.

I recommend this book to people of all ages and backgrounds. The author's writing style is simple and insightful. His aim is to promote peace, happiness, health, and wisdom. He did a great job!
