Somehow this book, these characters never hooked me.. the story had potential but I just wasn't buying into the fantasy. It seemed stilted and the progression of their relationship sudden and uneven. Even though there weren't any fantastical plot elements I found this story unbelievable and farfetched.
Megan is rebuilding her life after 10 years in an abusive relationship. Her ex-husband emotionally and physically abuses her, including RAPE. At her ex's hands she is recovering from the loss of a pregnancy and a severe leg injury.
Kyle has achieved success as an artist but is looking for more from life, he decides to offer art therapy to help people suffering emotionally. My biggest problem with him is that he doesn't share anything of himself with Megan. The relationship is very one-sided in that way. There is also no proof that he has any training in Art Therapy, only that he is a successful artist and former art teacher.
Their relationship is almost too easy considering what Megan must have suffered at the hands of her ex-husband. I found it hard to believe that she was swept away with passion that they supposedly felt for each other.
The sex scenes didn't gel for me. This is a woman who is only one year out of abusive relationship and she hasn't had any therapy. Yet when they have sex it's very intense and slightly fast paced... not quite slam bam thank you ma'am.. but he's quick to go to the finish line. One of the first things he does after they get naked is finger her. It seemed abrupt and distasteful.
Here is part of the passage I am referring to:
"then, before Megan had time to even register his intention...(he) drove his finger deep into the hot moist centre of her femininity"
Then minutes later he "thrust in deeply"
