Product description

Product Description

Paramedics take highly complex and often rapid decisions under the most challenging of circumstances. Often the outcome for the patient and the required co-operation from all pre-hospital care providers in developing a short-term patient care plan will hang on the first decisions and initial communications.

In Paramedic communication, influence and decision-making: A guide for EMS professionals, the author writes in an interesting way to probe and challenge the reader’s thoughts and decision-making. He has a very wide and varied experience base, gained from more than 22 years of ‘out of hospital’ work. The situations described are based on real-life experiences and reflect the author’s clear ability to analyse, reflect and learn from both the successful and not-so-successful communications and actions.

The prose cleverly moves you into the present tense so as you really feel that you are in the middle of each situation. Explore the dilemmas and decide what you would do. For new Paramedics and those who aspire to be members of today's modern ambulance services, this book is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, a must read! 22 January 2014

I write this review not as a paramedic but as a student of Business Management and an employee of Technical Support. The information in this book does not just apply to Paramedics, EMT or first responders; it can be applied to any situation. After reading this book I found myself reviewing situations in work where communication had failed both my colleagues and the customers they support - which lead to my analysing and developing more efficient communication methods.

The situations reviewed in this book do not follow a typical textbook format - they are real life and put you right there in the situation. I believe that this is why this book is alike no other; it is not boring or made up of pages filled with instructions on how you should communicate, it provides stories (which can be quite funny!) that portray situations where communication was ineffective and encourages the reader to digest the information provided to understand what went wrong, and how it should be corrected.

Overall this book is amusing and informative.

A must read for anyone in, or thinking of joining, the emergency services - but also should be considered by students and communicators as a valuable learning tool.
