A sentient virus that is out to infect all life. Authors of sF have come up with some unpleasant scenarios but a virus that uses it's victims as hosts has to be one of the most disturbing. Lots of action and intrigue, the rivalry between the great powers is stil a factor. Good characters, the subplot of a previously infected marine was particularly compelling. How do her colleagues know that she is under her own control? How does she fit back in to the marines? Can she ever be allowed back home? I'm eager to find out what happens next.

A Threat Beyond Imagination
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 February 2019Verified Purchase
The 13th novel in this long running series arrives with "Para Bellum" as humanity faces another threat from beyond their borders one which eclipses the more traditional enemies the human race have faced so far. An insidious virus which can take control of beings and by extension ships and worlds threatens the human race but with so many ships and people how to prevent something so small getting an unseen foothold. That is the task given to the major powers of the Earth and directly to the task force assigned to return to the frontier and deal with the catastrophic first contact. The Russians have allied themselves with the fleet but with an agenda, they need to find the Dezhnev which made its own first contact unaware of the threat they faced and it may be they have sentenced humanity to death through their arrogance, desperation and greed.
Captain Alice Campbell currently the only survivor of exposure to the virus is deployed with the fleet, not fully trusted (even by herself) her insights may just give them an edge and indeed by using this character as a focal point Christopher maintains his strong character based writing while not denying the readers a decent amount of action and suspense between the stars. Another entertaining addition to the Ark Royal series and well worth picking up the first novel in the series and seeing if like me you get hooked.

Stiff upper-lip sci-fi
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 April 2020Verified Purchase
This book is near-ish future sci-fi. It has spaceships and aliens but also existing nations and national frictions. The story, like all the others in the series, is told firmly from the point of view of British people and the future British nation.
Christopher Nuttall is no Shakespeare, and I can barely abide the Audible narrator’s style. Yet I’ve read and listed to probably 10 of his 14 books and loved them all. This is pulp fiction, roman de gare, and it’s wonderful stuff.
Invincible, Para Bellum and Right of the Line for a trilogy. They tell the story of a war against a new type of enemy. The scenario is hard to outline without giving a spoiler, so I’ll refer you to the books’ blurbs. I can say that this is the right sci-fi to read in current times…
The main protagonist is the aristocrat Captain Sir Stephen Shields, in charge of the assault carrier Invincible. Over the course of the trilogy, he comes to be in charge of a small fleet. There is a substantial and successful sub-plot which centres on the carrier’s fighter pilots.
Since Nuttall retains the national structures of politics, it’s inevitable that his views on politics and culture figure heavily. Here, it turns out that he is a small-c, wet and one one-nation, conservative. There is a lot of stiff upper lip and lairy Americans and grim Russians, but also Muslim women starfighters defending Britain. This makes the book rather unique and valuable in speculative fiction, where the right-inclined authors are so often extreme and even racist (see NK Jemisin’s Hugo acceptance speech). I’ll can’t wait for the next book from this independent author.

Space travel keeping up the best traditions of the Royal Navy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 May 2019Verified Purchase
Being a navy veteran I love reading this series. The twists and turns if the plot, its tie in with national politics and and international intrigue gives an added dimension along with intrafamily relationships. I did think some parts were repetitive and there are far too many "thoughts put aside for later consideration" Looking forward to the third book in this trilogy

Once again another brilliant book. This is the 13th book in the series and yet the series is in no way jaded or losing its edge. This was a great book with lots of action, very strong characters and an exciting story to bind it all together. i am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book! Can't come soon enough!

Ark Royal Keeps On Cruising
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2018Verified Purchase
OK, not literally Ark Royal - the action takes place on Invincible, which is the kind of reinvention that explains why even 13 books into the series it still feels fresh. The other side of that is that Chris Nuttall has a real respect for both his characters and his readers. He writes his characters as though they were serious people doing an important job and puts them in a story that flows logically from the circumstances they find themselves in. It sounds like a simple formula but few do it as well as CN does.
TL/DR: If you like the Ark Royal series, then this is the type of Ark Royal that you'll like.
