At first I doubted if an expansion roughly the same price as the original game would be worth it, but I've had such a blast with the new roles and new game modes that I thought I would share.
I should also mention that before the expansion, Pandemic: The Cure was already one of my favorite games. I love Pandemic, but The Cure really tickles my dice-rolling fancy. The game has a way of going south in really unpredictable ways due to the dice. I know some people really hate that about dice, but every time I get a bad roll, it really gets my adrenaline pumping and increases the pressure to try to recover and win.
On to the expansion: The box includes 8 new roles, pawns, and the gorgeous dice for each. Most characters have a new symbol on each die. As far as I understand, creating new molds for all of the new dice is what contributed to the higher price. There are also 11 new Event cards and two new challenge modes, along with their components.
This expansion is considered a "Super-Expansion" because it is actually two planned expansions in one box. The creators have stated that the likelihood of getting two expansions approved for the game was low, so they put everything together in one release. Again, this contributes to the price and is something to consider. And there's a LOT of entertainment here.
So far, I have tried a few of the new roles. It's nice to see the Quarantine Specialist from other Pandemic games in this set. She prevents new treatment cubes from being placed in a region. The Field Director may use the treat symbol to treat in an adjacent region. I found this role to be one of the more helpful roles that I have played in this game, since it opens up lots of choice in treating cubes. The Epidemiologist may use one die to take a double sample. Again, this role is super helpful in finding disease cures. The Archivist can add more dice to samples already taken. I felt like all of the roles we played were "buffed" in order to be more helpful for the challenge modes.
As far as the challenge modes, we have only played the Purple Mutation Challenge and have not yet attempted Hot Zones. Honestly, we had so much fun trying out the new roles and events for a few games that we didn't feel the need to break out the challenge modes right away. The purple dice rolls are insane. If you roll a purple X2, you must draw another dice from the bag and re-roll to infect. -1 removes a dice from the bag out of the game completely.
All in all, this expansion is the most fun I've had in a game in months. Pandemic: The Cure was already one of my favorite games, and I don't think I'll be getting tired of it for a long time now.
Face dangerous new threats in Pandemic: The Cure - Experimental Meds as a fifth virus spreads across the globe and Hot Zones make their entrance, changing the rules for the worse! Fortunately, new medical experts have joined the fight to help you.
