While these guys have been ludicrously prolific of late...which is not a complaint...some of the releases have seemed a bit, well, 'loose' (some jammy type songs, lo-fi sound, etc.). This album is tight...these are well-crafted songs, incredibly well played and recorded. In terms of structure and timing, you will know fairly early that it is a King Gizzard album (not a bad thing!), but the style is a bit different. I wouldn't say there is a straight progression across their albums, as with so many bands where you can 'chart their growth over time', rather these guys seem to follow whatever their interest is at the time. One reason is that their songcraft started off pretty darned good...so many songwriters need to grow from basic tunes to more complex pieces...these guys had the complex pretty well in hand from the start. So, yes, there are times when you hear something that makes you go 'yup, this is King Gizzard!' but a lot of the time you are hearing things that are new for them. It's fun and interesting.
As to the Moog comment...there are a few songs on here where the Moog is very evident, someone really started playing with it and spent a lot of time re-discovering some awesome 70's-80's sounds. The song Loyalty could be used as a demo track for Moog! Please do not misunderstand, this song is absolutely, no question, EXCELLENT...it's just a Moog-fest, in all the best ways. It, and the prior song, Inner Cell, have parts that remind me of the Amiga MOD files of the mid-late 80's...just stupid-catchy and very interesting.
That is not all this album is about, though, it is very much a King Gizzard pop album. There's just some extra experimentation with synth (analog!) sounds and rhythm. That is what pop is all about, after all (look at the variety of styles you get in XTC's catalog, for example). Anyway, anyone who has enjoyed any of their other albums will enjoy this one. For me, it rivals Paper Mache Dream Balloon, though doesn't quite top it. Great stuff.
