About the author

Steven Konkoly is the Wall Street Journal and repeated #1 Amazon bestseller of over twenty thrillers.
Steven graduated from the United States Naval Academy, receiving a bachelor of science in English literature. He served the next eight years on active duty, traveling the world as a naval officer assigned to various Navy and Marine Corps units. His extensive journey spanned the globe, including a two-year tour of duty in Japan—and travel to more than twenty countries throughout Asia and the Middle East.
From enforcing United Nations sanctions against Iraq, as a maritime boarding officer in the Arabian Gulf, to directing aircraft bombing runs and naval gunfire strikes as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) assigned to a specialized Marine Corps unit, Steven's "in-house" experience with a wide range of regular and elite military units brings a unique authenticity to his thrillers.
He still wakes up at "zero dark thirty" to write for most of the day. When "off duty," he spends as much time as possible outdoors or travelling with his family--and dog.
Steven is an active member of the International Thriller Writers (ITW) and Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) organizations.

Let me explain.
The book is set shortly after a previous pandemic has wiped out a lot of the USA. I haven’t read that book but it’s understandable that many will be on a high sense of alert. So when a so far unconfirmed “event” wipes out a lot of the area surrounding Boston, our heroes need to get to safety, survive and get their kids back from Uni in the centre of Boston. And the main character is a former SEAL ( or similar).
So far so good and yes, not everyone left after an apocalypse will be good guys, so you need to protect yourself.
To say our hero and his family is well prepared is an understatement. They appear to have every peice of survival kit you’ve ever heard of and then some. And you might expect that a former services guy might have the odd firearm about, and I know this is a fictional account. But he has more kit than the entire UK Armed Forces combined, ( and yes I know our numbers have reduced markedly recently). But even if you allow for that as a plot device, his neighbours have enough fire power and kit to bring the whole of the SAS to their door if they were in the UK. Forgive the pun, bur it’s overkill times ten. When they get on the road, it’s a mind numbing caralogue of weapons and kit descriptions with enough acronyms that even if you wanted to look them up, you’d eventually lose the will to do so.
And I know that it would be every man and woman for themselves, but even the non com neighbours are blasting pretty much every thing they meet on their travels including a unfriendly wife battering neighbour.
I’ve enjoyed other books by the same author but there’s just so much unremitting gunplay, mainly with ordinance that they just happen to have in the garage, that it quickly becomes ludicrous. Read it all the way through but won’t be visiting the sequels

Eventually I ploughed through the mire to the end of the book - and guess what? The end is not the end! It is just some random point at which the author has decided to sell us another book instead of finishing this one. The first chapter remains totally unexplained, the protagonists main aim remains unfulfilled, he is exhausted and so am I.
If you are an American ex-serviceman, you might enjoy this series, but I am totally mystified by all the good reviews.

I have found it very hard to "visualise" the story as you would when reading other books and the story line unbelievable in some instances. Killing the neighbour within a few sentences was ridiculous. (don't worry nothing said there to spoil the rest of the book!)
Even at this two-third way point with the pace of the story, it is clear that it is set up further instalments which I shall not be participating in.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series and read books 1-4 after each other, I can't remember the last time I did this. to say I couldn't put it down would be an understatement! my ONLY criticism, and the reason for only 4 stars, was that there was far too much of what I call fine detail I don't need a complete breakdown of weapon systems used, also not all your readers are in the US so a minute description of routes taken mean nothing to us.
That said, the series took me on a journey I would not have missed.
