I used this book for a trip to look on old buildings and marble in Rome. It contains a wealth of details about the different places to visit, including information about specific attractions you otherwise might overlook, and background information about the different sites, including how they looked in classic time.
I found, it is essential to read in advance if you want to make the best use of the book, and perhaps use some high-liners and post-it notes as bookmarks.. It is impossible to absorb all the information about an attraction when you are there, and it may ruin your experience if you try to read all the description of all the things you see. However, you can get a lot of interesting background information from this book. Be aware this is a book about Rome, Ostia is not included.
