Product description

Product Description

England 1422: Owen Tudor, a Welsh servant, waits in Windsor Castle to meet his new mistress, the beautiful and lonely Queen Catherine of Valois, widow of the warrior king, Henry V. Her infant son is crowned King of England and France, and while the country simmers on the brink of civil war, Owen becomes her protector.

They fall in love, risking Owen’s life and Queen Catherine’s reputation—but how do they found the dynasty which changes British history – the Tudors?

This is the first historical novel to fully explore the amazing life of Owen Tudor, grandfather of King Henry VII and the great-grandfather of King Henry VIII. Set against a background of the conflict between the Houses of Lancaster and York, which develops into what have become known as the Wars of the Roses, Owen’s story deserves to be told.

Owen - Book One of the Tudor Trilogy is a new addition to story of the Tudors in the historical fiction tradition of C J Sansom, Conn Iggulden, Philippa Gregory and Hilary Mantel.

The poor writing and even worse understanding of human emotions made this book far too painful to finish reading.

When I started this book I was struck by the remarkable quality of the writing, and I say this having just come from reading books by Julian Barnes, Tolstoy and William Boyd. Tony Riches writes with clarity and empathy for his historical characters, imbuing them with real substance and heart that makes you feel you are among true men and women of history, not creatures of fantasy. In the recreation of Owen's life, Riches leads us through a series intriguing scenes, many rich in detail - though never overwritten - so we get a beguiling picture of life in Tudor times. As the story is told in the first person, the character of Owen himself is always present, and he is a pleasure to travel with, always level-headed and reasonable, never pompous or effusive, excellent company for the duration of the book, and like me, I'm sure readers will be sad to part company with him at the end. Tony Riches is certainly well worth reading. I'm pleased to have discovered him and surprised I haven't heard of him before.

Having read much of the history of the War of the Roses, it was a revelation to read of the elder Tudor, Owen. Tony Riches' book 'Owen', is a real page - turner. It brings a really personal account and fascinating view of the beginnings of the Tudor dynasty.

Historical novel that concentrates more on the history than the story-telling but is still interesting enough to make one look forward to the next book. The Tudor dynasty appears to have come from the Welsh Tudors and the French wife of the late King Henry. The rivalry for power between the houses of York and Lancaster provide an undercurrent throughout the story and affect the actions of the principal characters.
Looking forward to my next history lesson.

The first novel I have come across that chronicles the life of Owen Tudor and it is a great read. The author treats his subject with respect without reverence. The story, which he fully admits had to be partly fictionalized, seems soundly based on fact but still brings colour and life to the characters. I'm looking forward to book 2 in the series.

I really enjoyed reading the story of Owen Tudor - such a famous historical character but nothing really written about him. Tony Riches has brought this man to life with historical accuracy and a little poetic licence. Great read. I found it hard to put the book down. I am now about to read the next in the trilogy - Jasper,

A fascinating read on a little written about historical figure. As the author states there are huge gaps in the knowledge about the founder of the Tudor dynasty but they are plausibly filled in. Well written and a good, read - recommend it for anyone interested in this fascinating era in English history.
