I have always been surprised to hear the things that people say to one another as if nobody is listening. Overheard in America captures, for me, the banality, the warmth, the humor, and yes, the idiocy and thoughtlessness that accompanies every step you take on the streets of Urban America. Who are these people? Turns out they are everybody. How great it could be if you could harness the energy and candor so that people would speak their minds and be heard, not just eavesdropped upon. And I love the look of the book. It is so unstatic. Some pages made me do a double take -- to see if what I thought I saw was for real. Some people will just say, Oh -- I've seen that, heard that. And that's why to buy it. Especially for your friends who shy away from big cities and the grit and banality of urban life.

I've already read this book 5 times - it's easy to get caught up in it because the remarks are all real snippets of conversation, and the pictures are equally real slices of life. What I especially like, however, is that the pictures and quotes were not taken together, so the relationship between them is fluid; everchanging depending on my own mood and frame of reference. Just as one never steps in the same river twice, this book is a little diffferent every time you pick it up. Great for the coffee table and anywhere spontaneous reading happens, I hope Ms. Henry keeps the series going!
I am a foreigner in this country. A friend of mine suggested to buy " Overheard in AMerica" to understand this very unusual place. Even tough a lot of things I do not understand ( I am foreigner), it offers a personal and funny view of USA. I realized how many obese (fat) people live here. I can see the people in USA have nice clothes. I also see some sexy girls in Miami and Los Angeles. I am not a reporter like Mr Borat but I can report and recommend this book. I am so excited that I am going to order more copies for Christmas presents ( If you are jewish is a good Hanukah gift) If you live outside the USA this is a great introduction to the USA. When you come here (if you have enough money) you will overheard so many things you never heard before. I told you, I am a foreigner.
