Another great book by a very excellent writer.
TOP 500 REVIEWER
Thoroughly Entertaining. This is a very well written story, and it has an edge to it that I certainly enjoyed. It was quite easy to lose myself among the pages for quite a few hours. I quite enjoyed that there is more than one thing going on with investigation, and it easily held my attention.
Inspector Erlendur is confused why a man who has died by having his throat slashed would have the drug rohypnol in his mouth and throat. Finding more of the tablets in his jacket points to the victim being a rapist himself. It’s not an easy investigation for Erlendur and it doesn’t help that Sigurdur Oli doesn’t seem to keen to assist. She’s going to have to find out what rohypnol has to do with this man dying. From start to finish, this is a fabulous story. 5/5 Star Rating

Another carefully crafted novel from the Icelandic master

Arnaldur Indridason continues the high quality Reykjavik Murder Mysteries with this, the seventh title in the series. Erlandur, the series' dour lead character is absent in this one, leaving Elinborg to front an investigation into a murder and potential date rape in the city. Slowly and skilfully, Indridason builds the layers of the story, once again fusing elements of geography and landscape into the tortured lives and dark motivations of the characters he creates. With a lack of car chases, shoot-outs and other action-thriller plot devices, Indridason crafts altogether more thoughtful and realistic storylines. He doesn't sensationalise crime, nor does he seek to judge the evil that drives it, which places him firmly in the Simenon camp of crime writers. The translation is sympathetic and well-done. With Erlandur's absence, the woes of his private life and the melancholy he carries are certainly missing elements in Outrage, but overall the book is a strong addition to a compelling and atmospheric series of superior crime novels.

Fantastic and unexpectedly different
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2018Verified Purchase
I loved the fact that this was a real ‘digging for clues’ or ‘mystery’ kind of novel, and that the main character Erlendur was not in it... I kind of expected him to pop up at some point, but it has certainly made me want to crack on with the next in the series to see what’s happened to him.
I also loved getting to know Elinborg further and the interesting and sadly modern life we have to cope with as parents, just trying to do our best but thinking we never do.
Fascinating and leaving enough loose ends to perpetuate another mystery. Totally different from the others so far.
Brilliant!

creates a mood rather than a visceral impact

I finished Outrage just over a week before I sat down to write this review. What is unsettling is the fact that a lot of the plot had already started to slip away from my memory. I know I enjoyed reading the book a lot, but a fair bit failed to stick to the old grey cells. This has led me to reflect a little on Indridason's other translated books - all of which I've read. I've a mixed memory with respect to them. For example, I remember Jar City very well even though it's a few years since I've read it, but although Hypothermia was one of my books of 2010, I can't for the life of me recall what it was about (and I'm usually pretty good at remembering books and their plots). I think this is because Indridason's forte is ordinary characters and exposing the mundane and banal aspects of everyday life and police investigations. His stories are carefully layered and reflective, are philosophical in a literary sense, and have fairly ambiguous endings. It is the style, atmosphere and the central characters that linger not the plot. They're books that create a certain mood, rather than a visceral impact. That's also the reason why I like them so much. Outrage is a fine addition to the series, allowing one of the support characters to come to the fore. The reader finds out much more about Elinborg and her family circumstances and history, which was a nice complement to simply tracking Erlendur from book to book. Despite the fact that the stories seem to slip away from me, I'll be in the queue for the next one.

A compelling read.

Once again we have the familiar theme of current CID case entangled with a misper cold case. Erlendur is away somewhere leaving Elinborg at the helm to solve this murder case. I found it hard to put the book down and was completely hooked by the storyline.
In this story we find out more about Elinborgs personal life. Previously I had her as misplaced cake baking wannabe domestic goddess but there really is more to her than first met the eye. I really warmed to her and began to sense a hidden internal turmoil that I feel might be going to shape her future.
Thankfully I bought the next in the series at the same time so I can get straight onto the next and discover the answer to the two big questions left unanswered with the final turn of the page.
A great read, .now onto the next.

I found it good that another character was in the spotlight
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 April 2015Verified Purchase
Erlendur was on holiday in this book of the series, so the investigation was down to Elinborg. As with all the books I have read by Indridason , in this series, there are many twists and turns to the plot. I was left wondering where on earth was the investigation leading to. The plot involved the murder of a man, seemingly by a young woman he had plied with a 'date rape' drug.
I found it good that another character was in the spotlight. However, I fear that something amiss has happened to Erlendur and so I shall wait with expectation to read the next installment.
I recommend this book and others in the series for readers who enjoy well written, believable murder mysteries, with plots that keep the reader thinking.
