Product Description

Call the Midwife meets In the Middle of Nowhere in this heartwarming memoir of an adventurous Aussie midwife's life 'catching babies'.

Outback Midwife is the story of Beth McRae's 40 years as a midwife, from her terrifying first day witnessing a birth as a nave student nurse to her training as a midwife - the days when the words 'birth plan' were unheard of and what women wanted was a long way from being part of any plan - to the outback.

Beth's career of catching babies takes her from the city to the bush, bonding with people from all walks of life at one of the most important moments in their lives. But there was one more frontier she was determined to conquer.

At a time when most people are thinking about slowing down, Beth decides to move to a remote Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land to embark on a whole other adventure.

This book is outstanding, and if you are or have been a nurse, then you will enjoy and also laugh in remembrance at certain events.
Many people have no idea of how much a nurse is the backbone of a hospital and especially in the Maternity wards. These women often deliver babies on their own without a doctor present and can be absolutely trusted to do so.
In this story Beth is completely candid. She talks about her early occurrences and of feeling inadequate and then feeling so pleased when all worked out well for the patient. What I loved when reading this was that as most of us nurses, Beth always enjoyed learning ways to improve her knowledge and bring better care, safety and consideration to her patients. It wasn't until about three quarters through the story that Beth finally realised her dream of working outback. Yet, she needed all her gleaned experience before that to be adequately prepared.
Once again with having to understand the indigenous mother Beth does her best to understand the culture and amalgamate. She is not only a fantastic nurse but a wonderful woman, wife and mother as well.
Beth is what Australia is built on.... sheer determination and a will to do her best in every situation.

Loved this book. Beth McRae told a heartwarming passionate story of her life as a Midwife. I related to it as I trained as RN/Midwife in the same era. How wonderful she is to have then gone to NT to use her knowledge and skills with the indigenous women. I admire her tremendously.
