It’s one of those books that I wish I could have read more slowly to enjoy the experience over more days. But there was no way to read it slowly because I kept getting reeled further in. The author does a great job of constantly raising the stakes.
And the cast of characters really come to life. It’s not easy to balance such an intense story with a wide cast of characters, but the author does it well. It didn’t take long for me to feel like I had grown up with these people just as Jo did.
The setting is a character in itself. I love New Orleans, and that’s why I started reading this book in the first place. Because I love New Orleans, I’m pretty picky about how richly it’s portrayed in a book. This one exceeded my expectations.
This book is described as young adult fiction, but older folks like me will love it too. If you like a raw and spunky main character who has street smarts and a big heart, along with a very genuine and quirky supporting cast whose lives intertwine beautifully with the dramatic backdrop of 1950 New Orleans, this book is for you. Start early in the day or you will be up late.
I didn’t like the rushed ending and after investing in the story, I felt a bit cheated by it.
