Kim Hewett (aka the Seagull) lived in Bankstown, Sydney, with his Italian grandparents and his mother for six years before they moved to an inner-city Housing Commission flat amongst the slums of Waterloo in 1961. He attended Cleveland Street Primary where he topped his classes, was appointed School Captain, won a State Bursary and was awarded a place at Sydney Boys' High School in 1962. In addition to attending high school he studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and reached 6th Grade Musicianship by 1968. In 1965 he passed his Intermediate Certificate and left high school to begin an apprenticeship in Printing and Graphic Arts, which he successfully completed in 1970. As a qualified tradesman he worked in many large companies and was appointed department manager in three, before enrolling at Sydney TAFE to study for his Higher School Certificate in 1980. The following year he began his BA studies in Mass Communication/English at Macquarie University, Sydney, and graduated in 1988 with a degree in Sociology as well. In 1989 he joined the Social Research and Sociology teaching staff at Macquarie University and did similar work for Sydney University into the 1990s. During 1993 he studied for his Honours degree in Sociology at Macquarie and was successful, but returned to English and taught in various language-learning institutes around Sydney, as well as at several Universities in Turkey from 2000 onwards. Apart from his writing of Out With The Boys he has produced a number of films on travel and culture, and in November 2011 held a photographic exhibition in Istanbul. He is a keen traveller, musician and writer and hasn't stopped yet.
