The strap line on the front of the book says it all - "Twelve hours to find the girl or he'll find her corpse ...". Nothing particularly innovative or original there then. But once I'd started reading, I was surprised to see that I couldn't put it down.
The plot follows the usual crime thriller with a PI Bill Smith pitting his wits against an evil face from the past come back to taunt him. Bill's partner Lydia Chin is kidnapped and Bill must play the villain's games if he is to save her life. However the clues aren't straightforward and Bill quickly finds himself struggling.
The book covers a very short window of time and this means there is little time for reflection on the part of Bill or the reader. This is a refreshing change from some novels I have read recently with pages of narrative description and navel gazing!
There is nothing surprising in this book, it does follow a predictable path but it does so in a good page turning style. The character development is limited but the people in the novel are for the most part believable and fleshed out just enough. I have read a number of Rozan's Chin/Smith novels and this is no disappointment in the series. It doesn't need you to have read any of the others as the book stands on its own. However covering such a short time frame means little time for character background and so it may leave you wanting more.

Out For Blood is the story of Bill, a New York based private investigator. When he is woken by a voice-altered phone call informing him that they have his girlfriend & co-investigator Lydia Chin. She will be dead within 12 hours unless he plays a game with the unidentified voice on the phone. Bill scrabbles to think who he may have wronged enough to do this to him, but with the number of criminals he has put behind bars, the list is endless; he has no choice but to go along with the charade until he can work out who the perpetrator is. Will he manage to win this game of cat & mouse?

Out For Blood is - for the most part - a well-written and enjoyable read, however the plot is rather flimsy in places and some of the clues are so obscure that you would have to be a genius to pick them up in the 20 or so seconds it takes Bill. What is extremely annoying is his cohort, the young and "cool" Linus's diction; 'Dude' 'Dig' and 'Way' make triple figure appearances - is Linus from the 1960's or something? Second to this is Bill's complete ineptitude with modern technology - He is amazed by Facebook, Twitter and has no idea about mobile phones; literally, other characters have to dial the phone for him before he talks into them and is completely amazed by a stunning new piece of technology; something called a "Webcam". How on earth a P.I. has managed to keep pace in NY being that tech-illiterate is beyond me - what I'm trying to say is that the books reeks of hopping on the social media bandwagon (Twitter plays a small part in the plot). It's not cool, clever or even innovative.

When these annoying aspects of the dialogue are coupled with a tenuous and uninspired plot and the fact the book is only 339 pages long (wide spaced, largely dialogue-based) you really get the feeling that this book is just a shelf-filler. Recommended for a pulpy holiday read - But totally unworthy of the beaming recommendation put on the cover by Lee Child himself - upsetting.

Oh. A bit disappointing after I enjoyed a previous book in the series.

Whilst I like the characters and enjoy the easy to read style what I found lacking was the plot/story and thus no suspense was built and thrills were lacking. Bill's partner is kidnapped by a 'lunatic' who makes him play a game to get her back safely. Bill has to figure out clues 'the lunatic' sends in order to find the next location and get his partner back safely. Except the clues are clumsy and well, dreadful in places. Such a key opportunity to craft a fine book but sadly lacking. You look at a book like The Bone Collector who does this so well - by comparison this is very poor. For instance one set of clues contains some lengths of straw and something green. Straw = broom = witch plus the green is Greenwich. Ugh.

It's all a bit Scooby Doo. Silly and obscure clue solving really makes the story falter and stutter. Bill collects characters along the way, his partners tech-wizard nephew and his kickass would-be girlfriend, a cousin of hers, a pimp and his heavies. All of which add to the Scooby Doo feel in places. The nephew, Linus, sounds like Shaggy with his constant "hey dudes" attitude. His would-be girlfriend smart and sassy. There's even a big dog as part of the gang.

Oh dear.

Three stars is perhaps a little generous given the nature of the review but I did enjoy the characters and Bill's slow meltdown kept my interest even if the level of sophistication let it down badly. Even so 2 stars would seem too harsh. I picked it up for an easy non taxing read and that's what I got. Shame it wasn't quite up to scratch as it could have been a cracker.
