Full disclosure- I have known the author for many years, and honestly mostly bought the book to support my friend, but once I got it I figured what the heck might as well read it.
I am also not a huge Warhammer buff and honestly know very little of the lore of the Warhammer Universe except in passing from other friends who are big fans. Even still this book gripped me from the start. Stearns does a great job of weaving the greater Warhammer universe into the story in a way that doesn't exclude someone who isn't as familiar with it as some fans might be, and I am certain that those familiar with the overall lore would find many nuances to the book I didn't due to my lack of knowledge.
The main characters are well developed and their actions throughout the book never left you feeling like they came from left field. The plot of the story is compelling and pulls you along. I couldn't put it down and was up until 1 in the morning finishing it. Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend it to not only Warhammer fans but also anyone who likes a good futuristic space horror novel.
The book itself is well constructed, the paper was a nice thickness that at times made me think I was flipping two pages instead of one. The green edging on the paper edge is also a nice touch that fits well with the book cover and imagery.
I admit that had I not known the author I probably wouldn't have bought or read this book, simply due to my lack of playing the game. That said now that I have it has made me want to look at other works in the Warhammer Horror novel genre to see what else I might be missing.
