Product description

Product Description

My name is Maxton and I’m a trader.

I live on a soulless planet where gravity, oxygen, and everything else are sold to the highest bidder on the black market. People are sold on the black market, too. You have to work really hard not to become one of those people. Pay your taxes, keep your friends and family close, and more than anything else—don’t get caught by the Militia. But all the rules changed for me the day I found her.

My name is Sophelia and I’m a stowaway.

I’ve been a slave for almost as long as I can remember. Waiting for the one day, one second, for my proprietor to turn his head so I could run and never look back. Now I'm on the run. And on a planet where no one is on your side and people would turn you in for a good meal or a piece of a silver, being on the run on Landu is the last place you want to be. Until he found me.

I won't survive without him.

I can't breathe without her.

Love this story! Bring on the next part! Shelly always knows how to capture your interest and make you have late nights/and early mornings as you don't want to put the characters on the shelf for even a moment! May have neglected my house a little with this book! Oops <3

Oh my! I got this book for the story description, unfortunately there was no developement in either story line or characterization. The fact that there was no apparant editing could put you off reading this book. Internal dialogue trumped story line, yet I read on thinking optimistically that redemption would come with a turn of the page. Of course I also thought that while slogging through " Darwin On the Origin of Species". Misbegotten optimism at its finest! I gave this book one star for its jacket description in the hopes that the author will go back and rewrite to fit what it could be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the world the author created here.. 21 March 2016

Earth is no more. Life is now on Planet Landu which is on the other side of the sun. To survive you have to take gravity and oxygen pills. Problem is unless you part of the new government you either work in the mines and have to pay extremly high taxes or you’re a slave.

The Other Side Of Gravity is the first book in a new series. It reminded me a little of Divergent as the story progresses we see that its going to be the young adults that are going to make a stand in the new world and take back their lives and rights.

The main characters are Sophelia whose father died in the mines and whose mother died when she was 10 in what looked to be a sacrafice to make sure Sophelia would be able to do something significant in the future (we do not find out what that is in this book). After her mothers death she was made in to a slave for 10 years before she finally got her chance to escape.

Maxton works for and as a trader. Its on his boss ship that Sophelia stowes away and he finds her hiding. At first when he finds out the amount of the bounty on her head he turns her in for it but his concience gets to him and he instead escapes with her.

The author does a fabulous job of describing the world of Landu’s and how each group of people live. As the story progressive we find out Sophelia is someone important to the Patriots – the resistance group who wants to over throw Congress Hill.

The book does end with a pretty big cliffhanger but like Hunger Games and Divergent those stories were not all told in one book either. I really enjoyed what I’ve read so far and look forward to the next installment. I cant wait to meet the Patriots and also to continue to see the love bloom between Maxton and Sophelia.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Other Side 17 March 2016

I've read everything by Shelly Crane. More than a few times. It's come to the point, where I don't even both reading the synopsis anymore. Why bother? I know I'm going to like it. I say this about every book of hers, and not once has it been a let down.

The Other Side of Gravity was so much more.

Sophelia has been through a lot for being young. The world they live in, isn't like ours. Sophelia used to live in the stacks as it's called. A place where the poor live. It's gritty and not a very pleasant place to live, but as a child, she did okay there. Until something happens that sets into events that change her life. Suddenly, the slums don't seem so bad. Where she goes is much worse.

Fast forward about ten years, and she's finally breaking free. She's on the run to-hopefully-a better place. But then she runs into Maxton.

The one thing I love about Shelly Crane, is that the male characters she writes about, are amazing! You can't help but swoon and drool every time one is introduced (unless they're the bad guys!) Maxton was no different. I loved him immediately-even if he does begin on the wrong side of things. Once he meets Sopehlia, he knows she's different. And the second it clicked for him that he wanted her, and would do anything to be with her, he wasn't going to stop until he trusted her and believed her worth. He just wants her to feel free and whole. Here is a scene between them, which stuck with me:

2.0 out of 5 stars Not sci-fi, overly sappy insta love romance. 25 February 2017
By Rebecca Rakes - Published on

How this had so many great reviews is beyond me. The Other Side of Gravity isn’t even that well written. It's not sci-fi, it's a sappy romance. Worse, it’s insta love, no world building at all, has plot holes the size of basketballs, and blatantly robs the ideas of the movie In Time. It’s mindlessly entertaining at the beginning and drools on after that.
Certain ideas didn’t seem well thought out. Things like the sensors that fine you for cursing. They know who you are and tax you. Couldn’t they use that to find Soph and Maxton? Obviously they are always listening and that sensor can detect who you are either thru voice or their identity chip. How else would they get cursing added to their taxes? And in a society where cursing was forbidden and fined they would logically come up with new words for cursing, take muggle on Harry Potter. It would just naturally happen but it doesn’t here.
And the identity scramblers? If they had face scramblers on the whole time how did the twins recognize them? And how come the twins are the only ones to ever recognize them? And why would they trust or follow these twins? Fate they say in the book but really, why? They said she is important to the future uprising but then neither Maxton nor Sophelia ask any questions about it. They never ask why she is so important? What the doll is supposed to do? Is there a plan for this rebellion? All I got was that Sophelia, a slave girl who knew practically nothing about the world, was supposed to lead it. Why would anyone follow her? She cries ALL the time!
World building is also an issue. There is little to none unless it’s borrowed from another story (In Time). When a new piece of the world or technology shows up it’s almost as if it wasn’t planned and the author needed an idea to propel the story so she just added it on a whim. Nothing is consistent throughout the book.
What little plot there is really starts around 60% and that’s just to remind you there is a plot. It actually gets going around 80%, just in time to reassure you that you would have to sit thru another book to figure anything out. The rest of the book is Maxton and Sophelia making these grand, flowery, over dramatic declarations of their love for each other than questioning if they misunderstood the other one in the next paragraph. This happened at about every third page, over and over again.
Each character gives inspirational type speeches to other people too, but none are inspirational. Nothing was convincing as to why no one gives them up to the government. Its the kind of book where everyone is constantly misunderstanding the other person when everything is crystal clear. It got very annoying.
