From the Editor

The Other Girl is the kind of suspense that transports you to an entirely new world. Like Shutter Island and The Silent Patient before it, once I was in, this book never let me out of its grasp.

The year is 1942, and the morning after a terrible fire rips through Seacliff Lunatic Asylum, killing thirty-seven patients, Dr. Declan Harris interviews Edie, one of only two survivors. The novel’s pulse beats in the expertly drawn flashes of Edie’s mind as we alternate between past and present, and learn about Edie’s life before the asylum.

The rich, evocative period setting, compounded by the ruthless pace of Major’s writing, ensnared me. Although the real-life events at the asylum from which this novel was inspired are tragic enough, C D Major allowed me a glimpse at the haunting stories that so often lurk behind the veil of history. I followed Declan as he tried to piece together the truth behind Edie’s stories, beginning to question as he did whether she was insane at all. With the looming threat of an experimental, permanent treatment for her condition, we both knew how urgently he needed to find the answer. But when the truth was revealed, it was nothing like what I expected—instead, I felt the floor slip from under me.
