Somebody showed me a drawing from this book with beautiful ancient looking symbols which appealed to me. I read the gist of the series and bought the book. I really enjoyed the read. I especially liked Nero, the young orphan who has intrusive fear from old trauma. He's relatable, very human, and he gradually taps into his resourcefulness, boldness, and innate gifts. So nice to find a literary hero like Nero.
I give the book 3 stars out of 5 because I believe the author has 2 more stars of his own potential in story telling that are continuing to develop and I want to see his creative excellence keep building. I had a little difficulty following sometimes as so much information hits the reader at once. (There is a glossary of terms at the back of the book which I noticed too late.) Sometimes the solutions to problems seemed too convenient. But overall, I loved the swirling of cool and creative ideas about Aether, conflict, peace, and damaged and discarded characters finding their strengths. I liked the unusual fight scenes, the complex characters, and that nobody is perfect.
The book might translate well to audio. I loved the full cast presentations of Neil Gaiman's "The Sleeper and The Spindle", and also" The Graveyard Book". I thought the reader Mandy Sigfried for "Speak: 20th Anniversay Edition" by Laurie Halse Anderson might be good for The Orphans of New Lur. Also, Jim Dale (reader for Harry Potter series) or Mae Whitman who read "City of Bones" in Cassandra Clare's series could be great.
I imagine the simultaneously futuristic and ancient world that Vanier created could translate very nicely to the big screen. I'm looking forward to more from this author.
