About the Author

Jorn Lier Horst is the author of the highly successful William Wisting series of crime novels. Author Jorn Lier Horst served on the Larvik, Norway police force for eighteen years before retiring to focus on full-time writing. His lead fictional character is William Wisting, a veteran detective on the Larvik force.

In the novel, Wisting investigates two apparently unrelated murders. But is there a connection? One is the murder of a young woman on New Year’s Eve. The police already have a man in custody with overwhelming evidence against him. The other case is that of a taxi driver who mysteriously disappeared at about the same time the young woman was shot.

Wisting approaches these cases with his guiding philosophy. Quoting from the novel: “All cases had a hidden door. A concealed opening that only became visible when you looked at everything in the right context.”

Wisting does not accept anything just because others believe it. Everything is subject to careful scrutiny. Eyewitness accounts must be taken with that proverbial grain of salt.

Add a gun in a safe, drug deals, and a hidden microphone. Add a Mr. Nice Guy. Add superb writing.

I highly recommend this novel.

Ordeal is the 10th title (the 5th translated into English) in the Chief Inspector William Wisting series. He is now 55 and father to twins Thomas and Line, having lost his wife and their mother on a NORAD project in a previous book. He does not have some of the quirks of other detectives and for that seems a relatively gentle soul who takes his time to think through the processes of crime detection.

Daughter Line lives within spitting distance of her father and has a good eye for detail, as she has worked as a reporter but is now on maternity leave. She and her father are spending time doing up her house in preparation for the imminent birth of her first child. Her relatively new friend Sofie Lund is the granddaughter of eminent criminal Frank Mandt, whose house she has inherited.

In the basement of Sofie’s house is a safe, bolted to the floor, with no apparent key. And when she and Line attend the opening of the safe, what they discover has a crucial influence on two outstanding murders, that of taxi driver Jens Hummel (driver of taxi Z-1086) – a man with a generous heart – and the seemingly random killing of a young woman. Wisting negotiates his way through the evidence, witness statements and the politics of policing in this small town.

This book can be read as a stand-alone.

Jørn’s literary awards include the Norwegian Booksellers’ Prize, the Riverton Prize (Golden Revolver), the Scandinavian Glass Key and the prestigious Martin Beck Award.

In this novel, Chief Inspector William Wisting investigates two apparently unrelated murders. But Wisting sees a connection. A man went missing several months ago - and a woman was murdered in another town. Even though the police in the other town are certain that they have their man and are ready to go to trial - Wisting questions their conclusions. He does not just accept their conclusions - he believes you must develop a case with undeniable factcs. So he begins to scrutinize the case looking for the truth. This does not sit well with the police inspector in the other town - nor with the person in charge of the police
At the same time, Wisting's daughter, Line, has moved back home - practically next door - to Wisting - and she is expecting a baby at any moment
As you can guess, the two cases unfold and intertwine - and Line becomes involved. Great character development!

Jorn Lier Horst writes with the same voice as his memorable character, William Wisting - with precision and intelligence. Horst is a true master of narrative and dialogue and writes in a style that is easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable, page after page.
We've become used to the 'defective detective' trope in Scandinavian Noir, but Horst bucks that trend and delivers us a complex and likable protagonist who has a believable relationship with his family rather than the dysfunctional relationship we've come to expect.
Ordeal is an awesome and credible piece of work from one of the best crime procedural authors to emerge from the land of the midnight sun.

Great but too much Line

I really enjoy the wisting books - well written, interesting characters, complex plots. I have 2 complaints. I find that Wisting's daughter Line is too much of a coincident magnet - too often she gets involved 'by accident' - almost a feud ex machina. The book is still very enjoyable, but belief gets a bit hard to suspend.

A minor one, but annoying, is a publishing error. A late chapter was 'misplaced' about 2/3rds in which basically gave the climax away. Hopefully this has been sorted
