Immediately I wanted to know more about the author. While most fantasy writers are getting on the video game wagon thanks to the influx of Japanese dribble with over the top heroes with world breaking powers, Pike goes back to the D&D setup.
Pike's world's economics is not based around the recent housing crisis but instead of realeste he focuses more on the looting principals of fantasy worlds. We see a world where heroes are little better or sometimes worse than the monsters they go out to tame.
Gorm is the main character and is the focus on the story. Once the most decorated of dwarven heroes Gorm has since landed on hard times. Unable to escape his cowardice he has become an drunk and now steals from heroes.
Gaist. This character doesn't talk but acts as the muscle of the group. A weapons master he is capable of turning a fishing poll into a hat box into a deadly weapon.
Kaitha is an elven hero who has since fallen from grace.
Heraldin a bard and acts as the comic relief.
Jynn is one of the esteemed members of a wizard's guild who has specified on turning magic into an art form. While he is capable of using complicated spells he lacks the necessary fighting experience for being on an adventuring party.
Laruna is a pyromaniac with the capability to store and use large amounts of magical power. Unfortunately, Laruna has little in the way of self control and due to relying on raw talent has yet to prove that she understands the basic fundamentals of spellwork.
I enjoyed Pike's humour, his often dry wit and sarcasm, and his ability to poke fun of the world that he has made. I will be looking forward to his second book.
