My heart isn’t my own.
And I don’t mean romantically.

Six months ago, I had a heart transplant. Now I’m learning to live again with someone else’s heart beating in my chest. My scars both inside and out haunt my every waking moment.

Then I meet Rhys, the tattooed Yank that finds himself transplanted to my Southern hometown. Even though he’s haunted by his own scars, he’s determined to show me how to embrace my second chance at life.

I’m not sure if I can give someone my heart when it wasn’t mine to begin with.

And neither of our hearts will survive rejection.

A standalone NA contemporary romance that includes strong language, steamy scenes, and hope.

At the young age of twenty-one, Birmingham artist Becks – or Rebecca – Wells is living with a new lease on life. The only catch? She’s using someone else’s heart. As a post-heart transplant survivor, Becks is learning how to live again.

Somewhere on the other side of the Alabama city, a tattooed, rough-around-the-edges Rhys Young is also getting settled in a new life, living with his Gramps and taking care of his half-sister. Until a chance encounter with Becks ignites a yearning he can’t ignore.

In alternating first person points of view, Erin Hayes does a wonderful job of weaving this romantic story from Rhys to Becks and back again. Rhys is a great motorcycle-riding knight in a shining armor. In characterizing Becks, Hayes does a superb job of highlighting the long-term attention and medical care required by any patient that receives an organ transplant, as well as the unexpected results of survivor guilt.

I applaud Hayes for her attention to detail, her dedication to expressing the struggle as it can be, and for not shying away what can be a delicate subject matter. Her writing is smooth and easy to follow. This was a superb, highly recommended read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Open Hearts is a quick read that will completely suck you in 25 February 2016
By Bookish Things - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Open Hearts is a quick read that will completely suck you in. You have a guy and a girl from two completely different backgrounds but make each other happy. They each of things that they’ve gone through, and still are going through, but that doesn’t completely deter them from trying to live in the moment.

I love Becks. She is real. She struggles with survivor’s guilt, and doesn’t know if she’s deserving of the heart beating inside her. She’s funny, optimistic most of the time, and a great friend. She has to learn to come to terms with what it means to have a transplant and find herself worthy of living. I also love how much she uses her art to show what she’s feeling.

Rhys is amazing. Even if he thinks he used going to Birmingham as an excuse. You can tell he loves his family, well, the ones that don’t make his life hell. And I love the relationship he has with his grandpa. Even though they weren’t a huge part of each others’ lives when Rhys was young, they seem to get along great.

If there is anything you take away from this story, it’s that there is always hope. And to live every moment of your life. Don’t have regrets, and let love prevail.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story about life handing you second chances! 25 February 2016
By Tiffany Williams - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
"This was supposed to be the start of my happily ever after. So why doesn't it feel that way?"

Let me say that when I read the blurb for this book, I had to read it! I was intrigued by this unique storyline and how it would play out.
To say I am impressed would be an understatement!

I am floored by the pure emotion and raw material this story contains.
You have two individuals with broken hearts--both figuratively and literally.
Two souls that are brought together over the love of an old motorcycle and an attraction that can't be denied.

"On one side, I am being blessed with the gift of life. On the other, darker side, someone had to die to give me a heart...I realize that I have two sets of hopes and dreams now riding on my life. My donor's and mine. And it's terrifying."

Becks is a character that you want to read about.
She's young, but strong.
She's living life, but on borrowed time.
She's a fighter, but guilt consumes her.
I will admit that every page I turned, I was worried by what it would bring. Reading about the life of a heart transplant patient isn't easy. My own heart ached for her healing and understanding of the situation she was experiencing.

Then there was Rhys. This man--gosh, this man. From page one, I wanted to hug him. He lived a very rough life and didn't think he would ever have the chance to get away from it all. Upon hearing bad news, he packed up his life and moved down south to be with his Gramps and sister, Charlotte. That was the toughest, and most rewarding, thing he would ever do.
That move lead to Becks.
And Becks needed him just as much as he needed her.

"What does it matter? I'm literally dying as we speak! Whether it's tomorrow, three months from now, or a year, at some point, my body is going to reject my heart. Because that's what my body does. And then I'm screwed. I--"
"Don't you think like that. Don't you ever think that, Becks. Because you have my heart. And I won't allow you to reject it."

I adored this story so much!

It was beautifully written and you felt like you were reading a friend's life being told within the pages of this book. That's how much Becks and Rhys capture your attention-your heart.

Erin Hayes has a new fan now!
Thank you for bringing these characters to life and for bringing attention to the miracle that is in the form of transplants.

"Our scars make us who we are as much as the flesh and bones. They're permanent parts of our souls no matter how much they fade over time on the outside."

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING 25 February 2016
By Katie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
So I have a new BFF and I want you to all be super jealous of me! Erin Hayes is super sweet and an amazing writer! You should all want to be me because I have claimed her as mine!

I was graciously given an ARC of Erin’s newest book (that released today) Open Hearts and it was one of those books that you just don’t want to put down. I had to fight myself to put the book down and go to sleep the other night!!! It was a nice feeling that I have not had in quite sometime when reading.

This book is fresh and new and has such an original plot line it sucked me in from the prologue and spit me out at the end. Erin’s writing is impeccable and flows so smoothly its amazing to read and almost impossible to believe that she writes so effortlessly.

The book is full of gripping emotion that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. You will falling in love, feel the butterflies in your stomach as if it was you this was happening to. You will be devastated and heartbroken but you will be pulled up and be healed. You will have all the feels!

I loved this book hard and it will be a story that stays with me and those are my favorite! Go run and get this book you will not be disappointed!

Not only is Erin a doll but she is generous...Half of all royalties from preorders and release week will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Congratulations Erin (my new BFF) and I give this book 10 shiny gold stars!! Keep writing and I can’t wait to read more of your work!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Love Story! 27 February 2016
By Sara Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I have been a huge fan of Erin’s work since I read I’d Rather Be A Witch last year! So I knew with this story we were going to get a quirky unorthodox story with some awesome characters. What I wasn’t quite expecting was all the intense feels this book inspired or the questions it raised. All of Becks questions and those moments of survivors guilt that she enjoys a fuller life now due to someone else’s tragedy were ones that make you set down the book and go what if? What if this was my reality and how would I deal with it? On a personal level I could relate to this story because I have heart problems myself and have since I was a little kid. Thankfully, its never gotten serious enough to where I needed a transplant! But when you face problems like Becks is experiencing its pretty natural to have those questions. I love the journey she takes in this story. Even though there are some ups and downs its a very real journey that people take.
Then we have Rhys! — he was completely unique all in his own right and from the first time we see him as a little boy it was completely heartbreaking! Like I was wiping tears away within the first few pages. Later when we see him on the Triumph racing away from everything that bothers him you sense he values the freedom of the open road. Becks first run in with him was adorably awkward but hilarious all the same and that’s when you know this isn’t going to be your run of the mill romance novel. Its deeper than that!
With these characters (just like in all her other books!) Erin gives us these full of life quirky characters that are not perfect but with their imperfections and doubts and questions it makes them the most memorable. Typically I read over 300 books a year so I meet a lot of different characters haha and some you forget but some stick in your soul. That is definitely where Becks and Rhys live
