Product Description

The stories we tell about our lives become our personal truth—and our identities.

In the Holy Land where Israelis and Palestinians reside in a common land, many share a common history. Here in Open Doors, women from this historic region share the personal details of their lives in their own words. They tell their life stories—and offer us different perspectives of their existence in an area identified as much by conflict and unrest as by religion.

These women vary in age, religion, and educational level. Some are refugees. Some are immigrants coming from different continents, other conflicts and other wars. A few came with only the clothes on their backs, forced to completely rebuild their lives. Others fled their homes at a minute’s notice, staring into the barrel of a machine gun. Yet, each woman’s experience shows a strong connection to this common land.

Journey through the Holy Land to read the stories of these courageous women whose hope, bravery, strength and wisdom show the true beauty and character of this land and the people who reside within its boundaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, insightful, uplifting 17 May 2014

I loved reading Open Doors. It is very different from most books I've read on the area and allows for an unbiased perspective of the people living there by allowing them to tell their story how they want. The book goes through various life stories of people living in the Holy Land and gives an insightful picture of the diverse backgrounds that make up the region. I feel like I have a new respect for the melting pot that lives there. They tell you their rich stories of how they got to where they are, their struggles, and their advice on how to live. In the end, you realize a bit more that we are really all the same and in search for love, peace, and happiness in an often uncertain world.
5.0 out of 5 stars Door and Mind Opener 28 August 2014

I throughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it as a must read for anyone interested in Israel and Palestine. This book is not only a door opener but a mind opener. Overall, the reader is provided with a mosaic of perspectives on the current situation between Israel and Palestine that spans various generations and communities within the area. It's very much a unique book in that it provides unfiltered tales of each individual's history, which often are not mainstream knowledge such as the stories of Yemenite Jews and non-Muslim Palestinians. With this approach the reader is allowed to form their own opinions that often feels as if you're talking directly to the interviewee. A must read!!!

Open Doors offers numerous personal insights to living in the Holy Land, both now and throughout the 20th century. The use of open-ended, unbiased questions allows for a more wholesome story from these women, who differ in religion, ethnic background, age, and experience. The footnotes and glossary provide a small background of various people, events, and locations pertinent to the Holy Land and the women's experiences in particular. The women's stories are engaging and heartfelt - you cannot help but live in their memories.
