Only Love is loosely and chronologically connected with Prizes as the main character mentions a character that previously appears in Prizes.
Doctor Hiller receives a patient with a very big tumor in her head and the patient was his true love whom he met in his early adulthood in Africa. He is not sure whether he will be able to save her. The rest of the story is narrated in flashbacks. When they first joined the program to relieve African people, they soon fall in love. One day when going out, they were attacked and Doc. Hiller got shot in the head. When he woke up, the girl disappeared.
Just when Doctor Hiller thinks his life is back to normal after many years, that girl, now a woman with two sons, re-appears, except she is there with the last hope of saving her own life.
The storyline seems not very interesting when compared with that of Prizes. But the characters in Only Love are mature in tone and thought. When Doctor Hiller has decided to marry his friend, Evie, they are united both musically and physically. So, when Silvia, the patient, proposes they start over again, Doctor Hiller rejects her insupportable offer of love.
After Silvia dies, doctor Hiller does not say anything but simply joins his wife by playing music. A very remarkable way to end a love story.
