Scottish action mayhem with jokes

It’s true that the setup takes a while as Brookmyre establishes some characters but it’s entertainingly done. Fifteen years after leaving high school a pretty random bunch of people are invited to a reunion at an unusual venue: it’s a former oil rig refitted as a luxury resort for British tourists which will eventually be towed to better weather near Africa. This project is the baby of the one kid who never made much of an impression at school, so for him it has a lot of show off value. But there’s been a big budget overrun, and the American investors have an evil plan to cash in, and out. The now-adults are happily re-connecting with free champagne when a bunch of well-armed soldiers of fortune arrives and the snafus begin. With trademark Scottish energy and directness the hostages battle it out with the cammo guys who are hoping to net some serious money. But there’s a big twist coming.

Apart from the witty jokes and allusions, the prize sheep flying over a car etc etc, one of the most enjoyable things about this book is the characters themselves. They’re not all alcoholic stoats. Some are thoughtful, successful in various fields, endearing, funny, genuine folks. The women are well-written too, which isn’t always the case in action-type books. Along the way there’s some interesting discussion of pacifism and an analysis of action movies between two people you’d least expect it from. Good fun, and not too much Scottish brogue.

A friend recommended this to be the first book of Christopher's to read... and I was not disappointed! Its funny, frenetic, brilliant, dark, laugh out loud hilarious and completely un-put-down-able (???). Right now, I think I might need a wee lie down in a dark room because my heart has been racing 90 to the dozen since it all kicked off! Look, if you're an open-minded soul, who loves an action-packed adventure, being completely swept away into someone else's very real imagination... you will love this! And if you're not... I'd still suggest you check it out... it may very well change your mind!

Mr Brookmyres first novel`s opening chapter is an absolute gem - funny and shocking in turn. The opening chapter of this, his fourth book, tops this - gory yes, but also made me laugh out loud so many times. Brutally hooked from that point on.

In chapter 2 there is a welcome return for Inspector McGregor (he of the debut novel) who has just retired from the Force looking for some well descerved peace and quiet. Needless to say, there is no chance. Incidentally that`s why I think its best to read these novels in sequence - people often pop up in a later book.

This is a very funny, very violent book where the main event is one of those school reunions that sound abslutely dreadful, and for different reasons that is how this one turns out. There`s also a very heartening theme of ordinary people rising to extraordinary heights, although naturally tempered with people doing the exact opposite.

Absolutely recommended.

I was attracted to the book's ridiculous plot - 'school reunion on an oil rig? Okay, I'll go with that' - and the novelty sustained me enough to get to the finish. But it was touch and go. The prose style puts me in mind of a book of Woody Allen short stories I bought many years ago. Like Allen, Brookmyre is torn between being a writer and being a humorist - and too often the latter wins out. It's good to read funny, but he isn't always as funny as thinks he is - or else he strains at it, as if afraid he'll get caught being one of those soft southern 'literary writer' types. So too often he displays a this'll-get-a-laugh attitude to the material, where a simple telling of the tale would work just as well.

Maybe I was looking for more than the book could give. It's an easy read and makes portrays ordinary working class Scots without resorting to drunken violent stereotypes. His style isn't pretentious but it's definitely smart-alecky. The persistent mining of modern/popular culture might appeal to fans of Tarantino. And the mix of high-concept blockbuster movie tropes and cheeky wee Scottish types is at least an oddity in terms of conventional crime thrillers.

This was my first experience of Christopher Brookmyre and it was a pure delight. He tells a great story. This one's a comedy thriller with real laughs, real thrills and characters you would like to have as friends.

My only caution is on the language: not the fact that it is coarse; that's how people speak and the swearing in the book is done with precision and artistry. The caution is that Brookmyre is a Scots speaker and makes full use of that rich language. If your only tongue is English then buy yourself a Scots dictionary and be further enriched - by the story and by the wonderful language.
