Dedicated primary teacher and vintage clothes collector, Emily Parker and down, but not quite out musician, Ray Stone, are the main characters in 'One Christmas Star'. The book is fun, light and festive, but there are serious social issues addressed, as well. I enjoyed getting to know these two lovelies and witness their developing dynamic and growth.
Mandy Baggot's writing style is appealing, natural, clever and humourous. She is descriptive without being OTT and the characters are well drawn (even the secondary ones have plenty of definition). Mandy also pieces together the building of trust, the revealing of vulnerabilities and the strengthening bond between Emily and Ray, with expertise. (Ray's gorgeous song lyrics are gems btw.)
While the general plot outline is common, maybe even a little sentimental and predictable, it's acceptable for the genre. Besides, Mandy injects her own quirky moments, witty lines and authenticity onto each page - the result being, an adorable, warm and uplifting story.
This is my first book by the author and I'm glad I found her. She reminds me a little of an early Penny Reid with her intelligent, observant and honest-hearted approach...oh, and she's another wordsmith. Wonderful!
