A gripping read oozing with authenticity and action. Equal to Stephen Leather in this genre, our protagonist ‘John Carr’ is as good as ‘Spider Shepherd’ in every way. Admittedly the author’s name caught my attention (we share almost identical names) and by James Deegan’s resume, we are of a similar age too. Add Stephen Leather’s recommendation and I just had to see what this novel was like. A good thing that I did as it is one of the best that I have read in this genre and cannot wait for John Carr’s next adventure.
A well written thriller exploring the exploits of an ex-soldier, who was in the Para's and then the SAS of the British Army. Very good plot construction, with excellent use of flash-backs to times in the Para's and SAS. The pace continues throughout the whole book. The author uses his recall of his own armed forces experience to offer realism and credibility to a fast paced story. Overall, an excellent first book, competing and a match for Chris Ryan and Andy McNab.
