You get hooked into the storylines then it ends, leaving you up in the air ... obviously meant to encourage you to buy their full books.

The Variance Court by : Alexia Purdy
Far From Faerie
This seems to be a stand alone story. Hopefully it won't always be :)
Aylin is a nonmagickal girl living within a very magical world. Variance is incredibly dangerous for those without magick so she has never left her home. Her father used to go to town and trade at least once a year but he died. Should she stay safe at home? Or venture forth to find the things she needs? How will she survive without her father? Is she destined to die alone never even meeting anyone new?
Anna is just a normal girl living in the human world and trying to make a better life for herself. She is in college and trying very hard to get good grades... Too bad she just failed her Biochemistry Midterm and it looks like all her hard work has been for nothing! Why does the homeless guy near campus seem to be taking an interest in her? How can he seem to be a handsome well dressed man and a bum at almost the same time? Is she losing her mind? Or is there more to him than meets the eye? What can he possibly want with her?
***This story is suitable for young adult through adult readers who enjoy a bit of whimsy in their modern faerie tales filled with magick and mystery :)

Fantastic Tales
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2018Verified Purchase
I loved every single one of these 17 faerie tales and would definitely like to see more from the majority of the authors. I even bought a novel written by one of the featured authors (the one that wrote the Alice in Wonderland tale) because I wanted to read more about what happened to Alice in this author's re-imagining of the old classic.
Definitely made me realise that I'm actually a bit of a sucker for a good romantic tale... especially if there's a hint of dark fantasy involved... Great stuff!

A fantastic collection
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 August 2019Verified Purchase
There was a brilliant variety of stories in this collection - some better than others, but that was to be expected. I liked how some spun well known (and some lesser known) tales into something new, and how some took familiar fairytale elements and create something new and interesting.
I look forward to reading the other collections in the series.

Deliciously Dark
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 January 2019Verified Purchase
I downloaded Once Upon A Curse: 17 Dark Faerie Tales (Once Upon Series Book 1) along with a bundle of other free ebooks to keep on my devices. I used to be a heavy reader and sadly unable to spend time or have the concentration for much reading now but these stories were short enough to dip in and out of and are deliciously dark, well written and many with unexpected twists and endings. Definitely worth a read if you like dark tales!

This is a good box set.

I have enjoyed reading this.
What I'm thrilled about is that I have found some "new to me" authors to check out and I've really loved reading 4 out of the 17 tales while only a couple of stories were not to my taste. I think that is quite rare for a collection of this size and price.
I think it's got a nice assortment of different settings and sub-genres under the faerie tale themed umbrella to suit most tastes.
You can read my full review, which includes my thoughts about each of the 17 stories on my WordPress blog "Flora's Musings..."

Fairy tales

Did not like this at all, the stories were far too short to actually get interested in, boring in my opinion, I have read much better 'adult' retelling of the fairy tales. Did not finish it and deleted it from collection
