Lady Faith Westover, daughter of the Duke of Strathmore, knows better than anyone the scoundrel that Stephen had been. After all, he’d broken her heart in a wounding so terrible that it nearly destroyed her belief in love. Now he’s back and hell bent on proving that he’s changed. Four years have certainly matured him physically, but Faith doubts if he’s truly changed into the respectable and loving lord he proclaims himself to be. When faced with his past as a scoundrel, can Stephen find a way to obtain what his heart desires most—the woman he was never meant to have?

About the author

I’m an author of spicy Regency romance with alpha heroes and independent heroines, layers of emotion, and lots of sizzle. I fell in love with historical romances and all things Regency—and especially all those dashing Regency heroes—while living in England, where I spent most of my time reading Jane Austen and getting lost in London (especially the getting lost part). I have traveled around the world, both as a tourist and as a volunteer with children's organizations in Peru, Ecuador, Thailand, and Mexico. I love to hike and fly airplanes, adore all things chocolate and coffee, and am a Doctor Who fanatic (everyone says my house *is* bigger on the inside!). I am a terrible cook who hopes to one day use my oven for something other than shoe storage. In my spare time, when I'm not writing or teaching, I enjoy tending the roses in my garden during the summer and reading historical romances during the winter. My fav authors are Elizabeth Hoyt (her Maiden Lane series is fantastic!), Sabrina Jeffries (fabulous emotion on every page), Lisa Kleypas (whose prose is simply divine!)and Sylvia Day (who isn’t afraid to take historical romance in all kinds of new and hot directions).
I've been writing since 2015, when All About Romance named me Best Debut Historical Romance Author for my debut series, THE SECRET LIFE OF SCOUNDRELS. DUKES ARE FOREVER won the 2016 Maggie Award for Best Historical Romance, and HOW I MARRIED A MARQUESS was a 2017 RITA finalist. ALONG CAME A ROGUE broke through the usual Regency romance tropes by being about a woman who is nothing like other traditional Regency heroines. And in ONCE A SCOUNDREL, we’re taken twenty-five years into the future, to follow the loves and losses of the next generation of scoundrels.
I'm so excited this year to launch my new series, CAPTURING THE CARLISLES. When these heroes meet their heroines, they've met their matches--in more ways than one! IF THE DUKE DEMANDS, in which Sebastian’s desire to find the perfect duchess is turned upside down by Miranda Hodgkins, was named a TOP PICK by Night Owl Reviews. WHEN THE SCOUNDREL SINS is Quinton’s chance for love…if he can find a way to open his heart. (RT Reviews gave it a 4-1/2 stars TOP PICK rating.) Book 3, AS THE DEVIL DARES, to be released in March 2018, pits Robert Carlisle against his greatest adversary—Mariah Winslow, the woman standing between him and his business partnership. Stay tuned for more information about the Carlisle brothers and their equally rakish cousins!

Ms. Harrington latest work brings to mind the old adage "can a leopard change its spots?" or more aptly can a scoundrel change his ways? An unfinished past is confronted as long confirmed rogue Stephen Creshaw, Marquess of Dunwich returns to his former life four years later a changed man after serving in the military. Stephen's transformation from scoundrel to respectable man is unfortunately only apparent to him and sets him on a course of proving his worth to the woman he left behind brokenhearted, Lady Faith Westover.
An engaging story of extreme desires, the heroine's conflict between denying her urges and embracing a chance at love are well matched with the heroes determination to win her over. The hero's inner pain, that he carries from his past, add another interesting layer to this work as he struggles to find a place of acceptance within himself. Depictions by this author never take the easy route and are that much more intriguing and dimensional as a result of this. Ms. Harrington's ability to create kisses with words that leave readers with tangible heart flutters shows her mastery at portraying romance. Once a Scoundrel is a novella full of emotional stutters that as it progresses to a wonderful conclusion will leave not only its characters full of hope, happiness and peaceful resolutions but also its audience!
*I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.*
*While part of a series this book can be read as a stand alone.*

To begin with, it takes place over twenty years after all other books that she's written, showcasing two children from previous books' protagonists. That in an of itself isn't a huge deal, but neither of the children feel enough like their own characters to warrant having a whole book written about them. They were babies in the original series; what was so special about them that they alone got their own spin-off novel?
Beyond that, the story is surprisingly shallow for an author who has brought amazing depth and layers to her plots in the past. The whole "he doesn't really love me" cliche can be written well (and has been often in the past) but here comes across as whiny, making Faith seem like a flighty, silly girl rather than the bold young woman who would take a blow to defend a helpless dog (as the reader is supposed to see her). Stephen is more sympathetic, but we're constantly told that he's a changed man from who he was without being given much insight into who he was before hand as a comparison.
My final issue with the book is really a nit-pick by comparison to the other issues, but the sex scene is awkward and happens at a totally inappropriate time. Stephen has just ridden for two straight days and Faith has stayed up an equal number of nights caring for a sick woman who was on the brink of death. Said woman is just a few rooms down, still fighting for her life, when the hero and heroine decide to hit the sheets for the first time. It's awkward and inorganic, whereas if Harrington had waited for them to get everything sorted out and then have sex it would have felt a lot more emotionally fulfilling and appropriate.
Overall, my suggestion is that you read every other book that Anna Harrington has written, but skip this one.

Just couldn't hack it.
