This is a somewhat dark and often elliptical ending (maybe?) to a brilliant series which takes place in Regency England and centers around men of the upper class who seek pleasure from other men, sometimes while they are engaged or married to women. In this one, we get a preview of the action to follow in a very good prologue which introduces us to Rupert Manning, a member of the realm, and Angelo Marinari, whose various tricks start in the prologue and veer wildly into other plots and deeds once we get into the narrative of the book itself which takes place about five years later.
Nothing is ever as it seems in this one, which includes a suspected murder of Rupert's unfaithful wife, a bunch of other gruesome endings for nefarious characters, and a conflicted set of MCs who have never lost their hunger for each other which was set off, but not consummated, in the prologue.
I really liked these two because they seem to be real for the era--their fears, hang-ups, loyalties and plain old stubbornness eventually get to an ending which is pretty much shocking and satisfying at the same time. Terrific series.
This contains the perfect amount of action to suit Angelo plus sweetness and understanding where they finally talk to each other.
Plus we learn more about Bracknell and his reasons for denying Angelo for so long.
