I first read Cowboy Take Me Away in this series and decided I needed more. Once a Father is the story of Logan Wolf Track, Trace's father, and Mary Tutan, U.S. Army Sergeant and professional dog trainer. Logan is an expertly qualified horse trainer, but ineligible for the Double D's wild mustang training competition since he sits on the Lakota Sioux Council. Mary, on the other hand, Mary fails to qualify due to her inexperience. However, when the two team up, they provide the perfect blend of skill and instinct. The only problem: Mary is home for only thirty days. Can she and the attractive Lakota man get the job done? Add to the mix Mary's reason for being home-her mother's heart attack and her need to protect the older woman from a demanding and hard-to-like father.
Not the least of Mary's troubles is her growing attraction to Logan, and an unexpected discovery. Can Mary and the single father who stirs her passion have a future together?
Ms. Eagle has penned two wonderful protagonists, along with a cast of interesting secondary characters who appear in some of her other books in the series. We don't know the ages of Logan and Mary other than he's about ten years older. As a young man, he married a free-spirit woman with two sons, who left him shortly thereafter. He adopted both boys, who are now young men.
Interesting to this story is the detailed method of training a wild mustang. Readers loving horses will be interested in the training as well as the romance, which is very romantic and memorable. Ms. Eagle's strong plotting skills and word smithing stand out in this delightful story.
