I've had the rift s for 7 months now. Over this time it's been constant issues. You won't stop spending money on this headset to make it good. The audio is terrible.the headset is uncomfortable for extended use (which is a must when playing for anywhere over 1 hr).The microphone is terrible and will constantly have issues, my first issue with the microphone was it would stop picking up sound, now my issue is every time I play it will amplify and make it sound like I'm blowing at the microphone. The screen will randomly stop and go black or it will freeze. The headset will randomly stop tracking itself and you'll just have a still screen (this is a big one and can take ages to fix).100% do your research before buying this headset, I strongly suggest buying anything but oculus as they are owned by Facebook and will collect your data.Everyday I with I'd purchased a better headset.look at better headsets like the hp reverb 2 and the valve index.Hopefully you consider the warnings here.

I've previously used Vive & HP WMR headsets, I was torn between getting this or a Odyssey+. I chose the Rift S for better tracking and market share for game compatibility. Would have liked a manual IPD adjuster and 90hz but still happy with the rift at 80hz and my IPD at 69 seems to be fine with Software IPD adjustment.
First time i put on the Rift S I was blown away, the clarity and sweet spot was a massive upgrade. Really happy with the quality of lenses and screens. I do agree that the built in audio isnt great but it still does the job.

Pros : 5m Cable, huge sweet spot, clear image, comfortable, easy to setup, good compatibility (SteamVR), inside out tracking is spot on.
Cons : No manual IPD adjuster, no washable face gasket, built in audio isnt great (can use 3.5mm jack)

If you're sitting on the fence, buy a Rift S. The quality is great and i havent regretted my purchase at all. Really didnt notice any change from 90hz down to 80hz. It's actually IMO much smoother than the WMR i was using.

As the only vr headset I have used I can not compare quality and experience with other headsets, but compared to the Other available headsets in Australia value for money for this is great and I was not waiting to see if we ever get a valve index in Australia and not to meantion I foresee the price being at the high end. The rift s is fun and immersive and I am impressed with the feel, comfort, optics and clarity, I see a lot of people on the net complaining about the audio but I can say it’s a non issue for me or the immersion.
Shipping was good.
Highly recommend if you are keen to try a good quality mainstream be headset

Originally I had bought this product for the sake of gaming (as did many of us). When I first got my product everything ran perfect, BUT, I needed to tweak a few things relating to my pc by buying a better and faster GPU (1050 ti) in order to run vr in a smooth medium to high quality graphic content. Before purchasing my new gpu I had a much older gpu (745 oem) which came with my pre-built pc. The older gpu made my experience very..... sickening. This was because I would connect and put on my headset but while using the guardian feature the real time camera would basically be a slide show, if you were constantly pressing the mouse button every 0.5 seconds in a powerpoint slideshow, and that was the case with almost all the games I have played unless I customized the graphics of those games to low in order to get atleast 30 frames. With the new gpu replacement, I am able to play almost every game (when I say almost I say that because I cannot play asgard's wrath with good quality graphics but still decent performance but every other game is perfect with medium to high settings). When it comes to purchasing games for vr, you might want to wait a while before diving into vr so that more flashed out or exciting games can come out because currently alot of the games range from 0 to 60 (0 being the very cheap free stuff and 60 being the most recent and sometimes exciting stuff). I personally am not one of those people that HAVE to get 120 fps in every single game with ultra graphics, I am content with whichever balance between fps and quality but when it comes to vr, quality seems to over rule performance as some games are quality heavy (which can add to the experience) while others are very performance heavy (which takes into account your specs). The negatives I have had with this product is the multiple issues ranging from gaming to the product itself. When it comes to the product, the tracking is decent because at times my oculus wouldn't track my controllers and they would just be at the bottom (on the ground) but only be able to rotate even though they are actually in my hands, other times would be when my controllers sometimes don't track when they go slightly out of my field of view (strange because the headset is littered with sensors). Another issue relating to the controllers is their ability to drain batteries faster than the amount of times a PS4 controller runs out of charge (atleast 3 drained batteries to 1 out of charge ratio). Building on from there, the controllers themselves end up having the spring inside them squeak slightly from multiple uses (not sure if this is built in obsolescence or not) but they stop after either pressing the trigger down and blowing into the open crack or continued use. A positive about the headset and controllers is their 0.5 millisecond tracking which just makes playing games more fun. The headset also allows you to use your desktop in vr which I found to be a very useful feature when switching between games, quickly looking up youtube videos to watch or guides to help you through tough game puzzles. Building on to the games topic, there are some issues when it comes to playing games. These issues can range from black screens to the irritating "Vr device not found" or to the games not appearing in vr or other issues relating to missing files. At first I looked all over the internet for fixes to those issues but they would only fix the problem for a short while before the issue came back, however, I found that creating a shortcut to your desktop and then changing it's properties to running as admin would fix every issue (except the missing files, thats on you buddy). Now some positives when it comes to the overall idea of this product, playing games is a blast but I would prefer it if more were released because there is the constant need to play something else after having to finish a game. The headset is very adjustable and comfortable to wear (for those concerned about the soft pads getting sweaty, there is no need to worry, I have used the rift s for ages and they haven't been ruined). The built in sound is really good because it saves you from having to wear both your vr headset and a pair of headphones which will really make your head hot (trust me, learned from experience). Overall, the product is decent but some tweaks could be done to finish it all off.

Very passionate about VR after this purchase! No regrets, settings let you use your PCs power and it looks pretty good! Disappointed in Oculus Stores limited support for the S version where 'Star Wars Tales at Galaxy's Edge' is not yet available and may not become. The VR gaming catalogue is still fresh and over the coming years it will surely become more accessible, although right now, the rift s is brilliant for becoming acquainted with VR! I use an RTX 2080 and squadrons in this thing is a blast! Will need some well researched configurations through ini files and in game settings to make it work a dream!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing VR Experience and Much Better then the HTC Vive Cosmos
Reviewed in the United States on 17 June 2020

I don’t usually write such long reviews but I felt it was warranted after my experience with the HTC Vive Cosmos and the Oculus Rift S VR Headset.

A few months ago I started wanting to get in to playing my flight sim programs in VR. All the videos I saw on YouTube made it look really cool and I loved the idea of a more immersive experience. I had already gotten the PS4 VR Headset last year and found it to be fun but very limited and seemed more for kids games to me. Being the smart man that I am I waiting until the country was on shutdown to decide I could not wait any longer (being home all the time made me want more home entertainment). I had wanted to try the Oculus Rift S, just from the reviews and all the hype behind it but when O started looking t was sold-out everywhere and it did not look like it would be in stock anytime soon. Being determined to get a PC based VR Headset and being limited on room I needed model that did not require external tracking, limited me to only a few models. I looked in to the HTC Vive Cosmos and even though there were some bad reviews I figured it must be pretty good with the price tag of $699 and higher resolution that the Rift S. I ordered the HTC Vive Cosmos from Best Buy and was very excited when it arrived.

My HTC Vive Cosmos Experience.
The box itself was impressive and I found the instructions and setup to be fairly easy and was up and running is a short time. I downloaded a few games samples from the HTC Vive Cosmos app store and tried to play a few. This is where my first issues came up. How do you use this thing? I went through all the instructions and as each game or app would load it give some instructions on what the controllers do. I found the buttons did not do what it said a lot of the time or the game would load as if I were 10 feet tall of 3 feet tall. It was frustrating but I was brand new to this and figured I just needed to learn. I was ready to try my first VR flight sim experience and started up X-Plane 11 and turned on the VR setting and just like that I was in VR in a flight sim. Ok now how do I actually get a flight going or control the aircraft? It took me probably 2 hours to figure out all the controls and get to where I could actually get in a plane and fly. Now remember this was my first time trying a flight sim in VR, but all the videos I had seem made it look amazing, smooth and clear. I could not read any text on the dash, no gages, nothing. You can see it all just not clear enough to read the test. I took off and was impressed by the graphics when looking at a distance, looking at anything close and it was blurry, also jagged edges and low frame rate. I also found the controllers to be a bit on the large side and seemed too bulky and the battery life is not good. The headset itself was not very comfortable and was heavy in my head and face but usable. and I spend the next few days researching on how to get X-Plane 11 to work best in VR. A few changes to some settings and I gave it a few more tries. I got the graphics better to where I could read large text but that was about it. I did enjoy flying in VR but it was buggy and just not a great experience. I kept this up for a few weeks ad finally just gave up, it was too frustrating and too many glitches. I also did not have much luck on any other games or apps using the HTC Vive Cosmos, but DCS Wolds was better looking than X-Pane 11. I returned the headset and decided to wait until I could get the Oculus Rift S, although I was not sure if it would be any better.

My Oculus Rift S Experience.
It took me a couple of weeks to get an Oculus Rift S on preorder with Amazon, I finally got one (on pre-order) on June 3rd and it arrived on June 16th. I was very excited once it arrived and could not wait to see what it could do and if it would be any better of an experience. Once again the box was impressive but when you open it, it seem like less clutter in the box. Now for setup, it could not be any easier. You download the Oculus software and it basically walks you through step by step on how to set up your Rift S. I had already downloaded the Oculus software so my full insulation from opening the box to playing my first Oculus Rift S tutorial in VR took just over 5 minutes. It was amazingly simple. Ok so now I have it on and the first demo tutorials starts and I was blown away but how great the immersion was. It looked and felt so very much better than the HTC Vive Cosmos. I went through the tutorials and knew just how to use my controllers from the simple tutorials and I was ready to go. I download a few free apps and gave a few a try. I was so impressed by the VR immersion and overall experience. The headset itself is light and more comfortable than the HTC Vive Cosmos and it was easier to focus and overall it seemed brighter and clearer to me. The controllers are much more comfortable, light and fit my hands better, and so far the battery life is much better as well. I was now ready to give my flight sim’s a go. I booted up X-Pane 11 again and started the VR. Now this is where my experience really changed, for the better. Just the interface was smoother and I was easily able to select my options and start a flight all in VR. With the HTC Vive Cosmos I always had trouble using the controllers and trying to select something or flip a switch in the cockpit when flying. I had the hardest time aiming and selecting. With the Oculus Rift S it was so easy, just point and click and it just works. Now my flight starts and the first thing it was terrible, I had my graphics set to the highest possible settings (just to give it a try), I adjusted a could things and restarted my flight. Now I was in my plane, sitting on the tarmac and it was so very different from the HTC Vive Cosmos, the graphics were so much clearer and crisp. It just looked better and felt more realistic. I took off and flew around and was just amazed at how much better it was. I paid $699 for the HTC Vive Cosmos and really did not care much for it and felt like I wasted my money (I did get a full refund), I paid $399 for the Oculus Rift S and feel like I got a great deal. I have only spent a few hours on my Oculus Rift S but I am already very impressed with it and am quite happy with my purchase.

I would rate the HTC Vive Cosmos a 5 out of 10 and I would rate the Oculus Rift S a 8 out of 10

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing!

This is my first VR setup. It's utterly stable and reliable and works sooo well. I am very tall my kids aren't and yet switching between us between games has not caused any issues for me. We take it off, put it down and don't use it for a couple days...when we come back to it, no adjustment necessary, it just works all the time. This is what I perhaps love the most, an utterly reliable experience. On that note, let me say that I love VR and am truly impressed with the visual quality of the Rift S. It's a great design with awesome performance. I have a Geforce 1080 and performance is flawless so far. The game selection is awesome and impressive. this is a must buy.

Let me say again, VR is way better than I expected. The Oculus demo that gets you up to speed on VR is amazing for showing friends. They have all previously been "meh" about VR...until I showed them the demo, they are all convinced now, it's here to stay. It's that convincing and beautiful.

The displays are excellent in the headset. The screen door effect (which I was most concerned about originally) is so minimized as to be a non issue. This alone makes the Rift S a worthy upgrade. I'm not concerned about 80hz vs 90hz panels, having a consistent frame rate is more important imho...it really comes down to immersion and screen door effect more than anything takes me out of the moment, provided the other equipment in the chain is up to the task.

The inside out tracking works very well, Though my arms are long and I find I can reach beyond what the inside out tracking can track with arm movements at shoulder height, though it should be noted a firmware update has improved this considerably. It's not generally an issue at all, but it has been an issue a couple times.

I'm still amazed at how stable the headset is and how it doesn't lose calibration or suffer drift. It's so solid. That kind of reliability is huge and contributes to that the feeling you get from the device that it's a fully realized product.

They nailed it with this product.
