This beauty had been popping up in a couple of my book groups and being described as perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas and Holly Black I knew I had to try it and thank god I did 😂 the minute I finished this I pre-ordered the sequel.
Yes. It's that good. If you like SJM, Holly Black and some badass females discovering their place and powers in the world then DEFINITELY at least give this a try.
There are some cliches in terms of the struggle between light and darkness, discovery of magic powers and potential love triangles BUT they are well executed and unless you have a SERIOUS issue with these tropes I doubt it will effect you it's literally the only thing I could think of as a caveat 😂
Otherwise the characters and their relationships are diverse and fun to read. The world building is fantastic and well thought out and the parallels that come into play are dark and delicious and I LOVE IT ❤
TLDR: Imagine a Dark version of Throne of Glass and ACOTAR combined 👌❤

I received a complimentary copy of this book and volunteered to review it.
I loved this book!!! The twists and turns and mysterious characters with unknown agendas.
As with all stories like this, backstory and history is required to make sense of it. I love when the author takes the time to craft these out carefully and reveals things in small tidbits at a time.
Whenever someone says magic is forbidden there will always be a character with an insane amount of it. Whatever does with hers makes her pawn in a larger power play between the Solis and Noctis.
Stolas intrigues me but his unknown intentions keep me wary. I know that these two guys will somehow be a cause of conflict for her later in the series.
I’m curious as to the Shade Lord’s motives obviously but I’m becoming emotionally invested in Archeron and Haven’s growing relationship.
It’s obvious that Havens past has a significant role in why she can do the things she can do.
I hope that they find Rook some help and that Archeron pulls his head out.
For some reason I’m really hoping Bell and Bjorn meet and I’m already shipping them.
Awesome read.

Oath Taker is the first novel in Audrey Grey’s new Kingdom of Runes series and offers readers a bewitching and sweeping fantasy adventure that will delight fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo with its fast pace, death-defying danger and bold characters.
Having been saved from slavery by crown prince Bellamy of Penryth as a child, seventeen year old Haven Ashwood spends her days protecting and supporting the kind-hearted prince while secretly spending her nights hunting monsters just outside the castles walls. In a world where both light and dark magic exist, Haven remains an anomaly for her ability to wield both; her only friend the prince. Then Bell is kidnapped by the very monsters Haven hunts, and she finds herself determined to rescue him. Even if the cost means partnering with the arrogant Archeron Halfbane, a Sun Lord bound to the King of Penryth and a group of his fellow immortals. Journeying across the kingdom, Haven’s only hope at rescuing Bell lies in destroying the curse that hangs over Penryth, but to do so she must face a vicious Queen whose twisted magic is stronger than anything Haven has ever seen. Trusting Archeron isn’t an option, but as the only way to beat their shared foe, Haven will need to put her faith in the hands of someone capable of destroying her if she hopes to save the ones she loves…..
As someone who has read and adored all of Audrey Grey's novels to date, I was beyond stoked when I heard about her latest novel Oath Taker and as a fantasy lover I knew it sounded right up my alley. And boy was I right! In the vein of all the best fantasy novels, Oath Taker proved to be an exceptionally well plotted and detailed adventure that held my complete and utter attention from the very first page. Intertwining all the elements of a great fantasy---adventure, action, danger, magic, monsters, possible romance---Oath Taker brings to life a compelling and intriguing world in the form of Penryth, a land where humans exist alongside magic and creatures capable of wielding it with both kindness and cruelty.
Audrey Grey weaves together a really well rounded and paced story in Oath Taker. The world feels well structured and complete; nuanced and layered--it's clear Grey has put a lot of time and effort into constructing her world. Grey also implores a rich history to support her creation with a tangible backstory and mythology which includes the Noctis and Solis; two races of immortal beings who lives alongside and occasionally amongst the mortals of the world. I personally thought they were very intriguing races and am enjoying seeing them woven into the story which is darkly fairytale-like at times and reminiscent of some popular fantasy lore.
The protagonist of Oath Taker is Haven, a tough, capable and highly likable young woman who had a hard start in life and is guarded as a result. Haven doesn’t let a lot of people in and does not trust easily which has left her with only one person in her life she truly cares about; her best friend and the Crown Prince of Penryth Bellamy. Haven’s loyalty to Bellamy is unwavering and after he is kidnapped, she showcases her determination to find him constantly throughout the novel as she journeys with strangers in an effort to find him. I quite liked Haven. She intelligent and able and smart mouthed. This is a girl who knows how to take care of herself and I’m hoping she’ll find happiness throughout the series.
Alongside Haven is an interesting cast of characters, both human and immortal. Though primarily told through Haven’s perspective, Oath Taker also features chapters through the eyes of Archeron, Stolas and Bellamy. I genuinely enjoy the chemistry between Haven and Archeron and Haven and Stolas but am not liking the possibility of a love triangle. I foresee something similar to the Feyre/Tamlin/Rhysand love triangle Sarah J. Maas is famous for and am crossing my fingers this won’t be the case. Don’t get me wrong—I think both men are intriguing and promising characters but I really hate love triangles.
Swimming in magic and danger, Oath Taker is a lyrical and sweeping fantasy. Audrey Grey has set the base for what is sure to be a thrilling series and leaves this first instalment guaranteeing readers will be keeping their eyes peeled for more. I know I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel as soon as possible!

This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it.
It has everything a typical fantasy would have - a strong heroine (Haven) who discovers she has some wicked powers, a prince (Bell) being kidnapped and held prisoner, a curse on the land that needs to be broken. All that good stuff.
Look it’s nothing altogether new but it was still a really good take on it. I liked the found family vibes we get while following Haven on her journey to rescue Bell and break the curse. I also absolutely ADORED a certain dark lord.
Being part of a series it ends on a cliffhanger but it wasn’t too crazy. I definitely agree it has some SJM vibes so if you like that I think you’ll enjoy this too.

Such a brilliant read with a funny, flawed and awesome MC who just happens to be a girl! The plot is full of twists (and dare I venture potential lovers?!?!) and the overall world is absolutely absorbing! Off to read number 2!

I listened to the audiobook too so a word about the performance as well:
Voice: Vanessa Moyen is good at this so this book is narrated perfectly, with easy to recognize different voices for all the characters and very natural intonation for every situation so listening is very relaxing and fun. Excellent job!
Story: Wow, just... Wow! I did not expect to get so ecstatic over this book and it was probably a bad idea to start this book in the evening but I don’t mind being robbed of my sleep for gaining this gem of a story!
It just was that good that it left me too euphoric to sleep, I think I resembled being hyped up on some stimulants or something because I could not pause this book for something so ordinary or boring as sleep lol. I totally get the comparison with Sarah J. Maas, her first book left me in a similar state, although that book took me a bit longer to get through, but in all fairness: I read ToG myself and listened to this book so comparing isn’t exactly fair. It might be me evolving but I think I found this book a bit easier and definitely more captivating than Throne of Glass, although that book will remain a favorite nontheless but it’s not all action all the time, there’s more romance going on in ToG so of course Oath Taker will be more captivating if it barely contains all that romance (although you do get some tension and sparks that kind of leaves a promise for a bit of romance further along the series).
Audrey Grey excels at worldbuilding and dialogues, every bit of the story is fact-paced and every scene adds to the story. I love the characters, the mortals and immortal races each have their own specific features. I love the way that the immortals thinking about the mortals is portrayed. It’s very realistic in my opinion. Although it is fantasy, there’s still a... let’s call it a vibe, that makes it believable or not and this all feels so natural and logical. The characters all have dept, well, beside the mysterious ‘Creature’, he needs to be vague for the moment. I have an idea but it will surely be revealed in a sequel. But they each have their own past that lingers on their shoulders, coloring their (rash) decisions or actions.
All that character building gives for a plethora of funny little details in their interactions. I love all the witty remarks from our feisty mortal and the fun, rude, bored or stoic comments from the immortals from both the light as the dark side often turn into delicious dry humour. But still, there are enough serious conversations too so it’s not a comedy. It’s more of a captivating suspenseful fantasy story of epic proportions that needs to be translated to every language and needs to be made into a movie or series!
