HADRON Series

HADRON is a modern day story unrelated to the SODIUM-AMP-OMEGA trilogy series. After scientists using the Large Hadron Collider discover dark matter, the world is plunged into chaos. Massive waves of electromagnetic interference take out all grid power and forms of communication the world over. Cities go dark, food and water supplies are quickly used up, and marauders rule the highways. One group of citizens takes a stand. Can they make a difference? And the devastating EM waves, where are they coming from? After months of starvation, a benevolent species arrive in their spaceships to rescue the Human race. Only, are they really so benevolent?

ARMS Series

ARMS is set in the future after Earth was nearing an apocalyptic event. Two competing colony ships were built, taking five million inhabitants each through a wormhole to a pair of newly discovered planets. The planets were settled and not long after the colonies looked to the surrounding star systems for ownership and expansion, which led to a centuries long war between them. A truce was declared after the aggressor side began to lose ground.

Tawnish Freely and Harris Gruberg are genetically engineered Biomarines. Their lives have been dedicated to fighting the war. They find themselves struggling to find work among a population that fears them. Work is found only by delving into the delivery of illegal arms to the outer colonies. Things go awry when they discover their illicit dealings may just be the catalyst that brings back the Great War. They are determined to prevent that from happening.

There are some really interesting and likeable characters in this sci-fi tale. The duo of Knog (yep, he's an alien) and Joni, the rookie human Detective, manage to find themselves in some rather hair-raising (or Knog's equivalent) situations.

Some interesting twists require Joni to acquire an alias, Jetta Squirrel. Great name, which manages to conjure all sorts of very strange images in my head. The author most definitely has a good sense of humour.

Loved this beginning to the series and will be reading the remainder.

The story content is captivating. The writing style is abrupt almost primitive at times. Huge leaps of excitement in almost every chapter. I enjoyed the characters, the moral tensions and the resourceful solutions to each challenge.

I (foolishly) almost gave up on this book in the first chapter as I simply couldn't relate to the protagonist and his way of talking / thinking grated. When he started interacting with humans (So, I'm biased!) my perception of him and his mannerisms changed for the better and I quickly became immersed in his life.

The story moves on at a decent pace and its development is fairly logical, not hopelessly filled with unlikely coincidences. Accepting one impossible thing before breakfast (instantaneous transport with longer distances simply needing more power) makes the rest of the story easy to believe.

Looking forward to reading the next in the series, which I have just bought.

Great series, the stories develop in scale as the books progress, however each is definitely a story to itself. Bought and read the whole series. Well worth your time if you like SF. Love the fact its written from the POV of an alien species. Really makes a change. Well done S. Arseneault.

You know a book is bad when you get to 90% and you just can't be bothered going further. The basic universe is just unbelievable. Five galaxies, transport technology lost in the mists of time, one planet that produces critical components for spaceships. The book is simplistic beyond belief. I only read as much as I did because I got it for free and a number of morons gave it five stars.
