I liked the general plot. However there was far too much eye rolling from me to get me really enthused. You can’t have a 98% probability of matching DNA. You just can’t. And no one in 1975 had CCTV, let alone some dark alley in a backwater small town.
It’s fine for a debut novel. It’s fine if you just want a brainless read on the train to work. If you’re looking for something realistic, intellectually stimulating or unpredictable, this novel is not for you.
This is a powerful debut novel by Aussie author Christian White. The narrative alternates between the present and the past seamlessly, and you quickly find yourself drawn in to the mystery of Sammy. This is one that will keep you up reading until the small hours. Recommended.
There's a religious cult background in this story that really could only happen in 'outback' America.
My question after finishing this would be how can you go back to what you were before? What would I do in the same situation?
I thought that this was a good first novel but while the story was a good one, it needed something more in the telling. I'm just not sure at this stage what that is.
