While escaping, Frankie arrives on the outskirts of a small Colorado town in a storm, and ends up in a ditch at the side of the road. Her old car is damaged and she seeks help at a remote cabin owned by the soon to be instated new deputy sheriff, Wes Malone. Wes doesn’t quite believe her stories, and she pulls him further away from the truth with schemes to protect herself. As her story unfolds, Wes is pulled deeper into protecting her. They're soon drawn back into the dark underworld of gambling, sex, porn, and drugs that encompasses the seedier side of Vegas.
She doesn’t trust cops, having known some dirty ones, and he doesn’t trust women, having known a scheming ex-wife. Attracted to each other, finding ways to trust, and aid each other, a romance develops. But when Wes learns the depth of Frankie’s troubles, will that love and that trust be strong enough to face everything they must for their survival?
And Wes...what a doll! Susceptible to Frankie's charms, but not a total man-slut--he actually held off, and held his libido in check for an impressive time--for a romantic suspense hero--before allowing his manhood to succumb to the lure of his perfect love-mate.
And there were bad guys out the wazoo. I somehow managed to believe that all of these freaks found their way from Vegas to one small town in Colorado and back again. Hey...coincidences happen. And half naked waitresses fall through the ceiling sometimes, too!
The heroine is 23, the hero 28, and they made a good couple. Frankie is a little goofy, and I thought she was cute and sweet how she didn't like to cuss. A little cliché, the stripper with a heart of gold, but would we really like a heroine who's all mean and bitter? Nah. Frankie's sweet and has had her share of hard times and hard knocks. Sad backstory to her. But's she's fun and a little quirky, and I liked her.
I love hot cops, and Wes also had that something extra I also like in heroes: he's a bit of a jerk. Surly and prickly. One time I thought he was a little hard on Frankie, but she called him on his bitterness. He thinks Frankie's got too much emotional baggage, but he really needed to see he had his share, too, where women were concerned. Frankie works some magic on his hard, prickly shell.
So, we have sweet Frankie, surly Wes, some bad Vegas guys on the chase, some small-town strangeness, Wes's witchy ex-wife, and a killer on the hunt. The story reads fast and easy, and it felt fun with a couple of laugh out loud moments. Not loaded with sex, the romance was more steamy-sweet. A fun, easy, afternoon kind of read with some suspense. I'm hoping there'll be a story about Frankie's bf Lily. Now that chick was crazy badazz!
