Not just a standard novel!

There are two distinct levels of reading and mentally processing this book!
The basic "good guys v bad guys" level is fairly standard, although the "good" protagonists are drawn from novel backgrounds; which make it much more interesting
The underlying theme of religious intolerance and how it can become socialised and politically embedded are well brought out and reflect what appears to be happening currently in many countries.

Unlike Mr Brookmyres first two books, this story happens in the US - Los Angeles mainly. The Scotland connection is there through one of the leading characters - Steff - and there is a connection with his earlier work through Larry of the LAPD.

The evangelical Luther is intent on leading America away from sin and back to God. And America had better be listening, or else. The lengths some people will go to....

I enjoyed the story a lot, it`s never less than entertaining. But there is less outright humour in this book, no laugh-out-loud moments, compared with his first two. I also think its tough to write convincingly about the US unless you are actually speaking from experience and at times this compares poorly with a Carl Hiaasen, for example. Maybe it`s just me, but much prefer his stuff based in Scotland - that seems to ring true.

I liked Luther as a character, I think because we learn how he grew up and what might have made him turn out as he has. Didn`t feel I understood Steff or Larry as well.

Recommended but for me not as good as his first two.

Having read most of Chris Brookmyre's work I am finding this book a change from his norm.. I had hoped for a light summer read to slip in my luggage but unfortunately quickly realised that I could not give it sufficent attention. I am saving this one to my Kindle and I will be reading it later in the year! It is certainly not in the normal vain for him and I am unclear in my own self at this point, having read only a short part of the book , as to whether or not I could provide a sufficiently complete review for his more complex work?

Though normally quite a fan of Chris's books I feel this was one of his worst. I'm very much in the atheist camp but did find Chris's harrangues against Religious Fundamentalism to become more and more tiresome and had to skip paragraphs that felt as if they'd escaped from a Richard Dawkins novel, just to make it through the story.

That said the story itself was good and was the only thing that kept me going when at times I wanted to just abandon the book.

Another minor issue was the books 1999 setting, pre-millennia angst seems such a long way off, dating the book quite severely
