Product Description

Gillian Dempsey must find a reason to go on…

Easier said than done after a rare virus robs her of both parents. Left alone and confused, the mourning nineteen-year-old flees to her three best friends, who receive her with open arms.

Her parents give her more than an inheritance—they give her a second chance at life…

When Gillian is left with some properties in her parents’ will, she assigns them to a real estate agent to manage. Joel Matthews takes the job, but he quickly becomes more than a business associate. After a string of fortunate coincidences, Gillian and Joel spend a passionate night together—after which Joel all but vanishes from her life.

But they still have unfinished business, and Gillian won’t allow him to slip away—especially with her heart.

Life is a roller coaster of tragedy and joy…

Gillian reels him in, and soon the two are married. Gillian’s heart expands even more when they receive the news of their first pregnancy. But after the baby is born, things aren’t the same. Joel becomes distant…resentful. And then the abuse begins. Darkness consumes their marriage—only to get worse.

While Gillian tries to hold her family together, it seems Joel is doing everything to tear them apart. But just one slip of his temper makes all the difference, because this time, there’s no turning back.

Maybe being abused can be endured, as long as Nobody Knows…until someone ends up dead.

Please listen up ladies, this is going to push buttons, if you are at all wary of books that portray or touch upon domestic violence then this requires a little bit more consideration on your behalf, for me though while I am not saying that it was an easy read, far from it… I commend the author for talking such an acutely evocative situation and not just to pay it lip service.
Looks can be deceiving and Joel and Gillian are the masters of deception because while the world outside may think they are the perfect couple, only they know the true dynamics that dictate their relationship and none of it is pleasant.
Life with Joel is a constant battle to keep on his affable side, I mean the man doesn’t actually have a good side, he is beyond reprehensible.
He is never at home; Gillian is effectively a single parent while he if off doing whatever he wants.
His treatment of Gillian follows so many of the foreseeable patterns for domestic abuse but it isn’t that easy when you are caught in the eye of the storm.
His pattern was completely abhorrent, he believed his family only needed him for his money, his self-respect was pitiful and he took that out on Gillian, in the end I actually couldn’t see anything redeemable, he was using his own feelings of inadequacy to almost justify the spite that he exhibited towards those that for some reason loved him.
I found the book enlightening in parts, the relationship between Adele and Gillian, how long had this man been like this, I had the feeling that his mother wasn’t surprised by the man her son had grown into.
No child should ever live in fear of the man that should love and cherish them in this world, just as no woman should ever be beholden to a man that promised at one time to love her till death they do part, but the fact that this family live in such misery is an all too painful reminder that they don’t do this alone.
The book that addresses an all too common situation but does so with tact and sincerity.
5.0 out of 5 stars The author creates a poignant, thought provoking story without sensationalism. 3 March 2016

This story grabs you from the first line.
The acceptance, fear and guilt Gillian feels is evident as soon as we meet her and as her story unfolds, the reasons why are hauntingly clear. This isn’t an easy subject to write about or read but the author creates a poignant, thought provoking story without sensationalism. The writing is sensitive and the characters realistic and easy to relate to.
Joel is all surface glamour and no depth but it’s easy to see how he would attract Gillian, young and newly bereaved. Gillian is at an all time low when she meets Joel and never really manages to achieve her full potential. A victim of abuse she displays classic denial but although some of her actions are hard to support they are understandable.
Joel displays lack of insight and is completely self-centred. He is easy to hate.
The other women in Gillian’s life are vibrant and care about her even when she lies to them and pushes them out of her life. The see-sawing of Gillian’s relationship with her friends illustrates their powerlessness perfectly. If she hides the truth from them, they can’t help.
Joel’s mother is the most conflicted of the characters, Gillian sees her as a saviour but is Adele more motivated out of guilt than compassion?
The menace and suspense in this story is excellent and even though domestic abuse is not an easy story to write, this book succeeds right up to the riveting end.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read!! 21 March 2016

Powerful, intense and suspenseful story of a young woman name Gillian, who loses her family and falls for her handsome real estate broker. They have a steamy tryst, and as a result she becomes pregnant. He feels obligated to "do the right thing" so he proposes marriage. The result is a a tumultuous tale of mental and physical abuse that goes on for years because of the shame of revealing the secret of a failed marriage full of horrors. A real gritty story that was hard to read as it struck a chord since Gillian used the excuse of "doing the right thing" and stayed married for appearances and fear of what may happen to her husband Joel! Despite her shame and guilt, Gillian comes to terms with the realization that her protecting him kept her married, but at what price! The realization of the effects domestic violence has on everyone besides the abused spouse were revealed through the children's eyes so that the happy ending couldn't come fast enough.

This had all the makings of a real life Made for TV movie. That is not a slam by any means, it goes to the meat of the story that showed the amount of drama their lives contained that was put into this novel. There was a little too much introspection for me. I would have liked to have more interactions between the couple instead of the heroine thinking of past events I would have like to actually see how those incidents played out. I did like having Joel's POV when he was alone. I wanted to feel her fear & witness the violence not be told how it happened. It would've been even deeper if we had witnessed Joel's POV during the abuse. The only time we got his POV was during the abuse was in the last scene. This was too close to real life for abusers & their victims for me. I'm glad Gillian had great support. So many victims of domestic violence do not have any support because the abusers make them distance themselves from any type of family & friends so the secret stays hidden more. This was a complete novel & did not end on a cliffhanger.
