Interview with the Author
Q: What made you want to write a kids science fiction adventure based on an ark in space?
A: First of all, why not? It just seemed like a bunch of fun. But seriously, when my son was young he was an avid reader, and I noticed a complete lack of preteen science fiction books, so I wanted to write a fun, children’s science fiction series that I knew he would love.
Q: But why a kids and teen science fiction book? It seems like children and teenagers are more into fantasy.
A: Don’t get me wrong, I love fantasy, but there’s just something about science fiction that gets my heart pounding. The Noah Zarc series are children’s science fiction books that are part dystopian, part action adventure, and just a whole lot of fun. But, they also ask deeper questions about the power of family, and even what it means to be human.
Q: So it’s a middle grade dystopian? Can’t that be a little dark for kids?
A: There is definitely a trend in teen science fiction and fantasy to go a little darker, but that wasn’t my goal here. Noah Zarc could be considered religious Christian science fiction. What this mostly means is the books are clean and fun. The dystopian side asks some serious questions. Some are related to what happens when a government gets too powerful and does whatever it wants. But that is more just the backdrop for an action adventure novel in space, with cool gadgets, time-travel, robots, and a boy who overcomes every obstacle to save those he loves.
Q: Why did you create this special edition?
A: I grew up reading classic coming of age science fiction and fantasy. Many of them had illustrations that I just loved. So I wanted to create a version of the Noah Zarc series with my vision of what the characters and spaceships looked like. It was more for me than anything. But I sure hope readers like it too. So dig in and I hope you’ll let me know what you think. And look inside the book for details on the short story prequel to the series.
