When I saw this controller, I was very happy as it has my personal style: black, grey, Link. I had to have it. I've only played Breath of the Wild with it, and the experience is very different from the joycons.
It's bigger than the joycons-- very comfortable.
It's soft to the touch and quite ergonomic.
Comes with both concave and domed joysticks you can change.
The USB cable is long.
It's way cheaper than the Pro Controller.
** Works with PS3
** Works with PC in case you use emulators.
Doesn't support amiibo function.
Doesn't support vibration.
Doesn't have motion controls (played BOTW? Gyroscope Shrines are impossible with this)
Naturally, you can only use it while the Switch is docked.
** Doesn't work on PS4
Being different in size and design from the joycons, you'll have to reacustom your muscle memory to the new button arrangement and spacing.
It is exactly as advertised, so in that sense I would give it 5 stars. However, the question is how much I like it, and the missing motion controlls are something I really miss while playing-- I use my bow and arrows often.
I've included some pictures to show the box, design, and size comparisson to other controllers.
I do miss having any kind of rumble feature, and it is a slight inconvenience that you have to take the Joy Con off the Switch/Dock in order to scan an amiibo. But for me, these things really are just inconveniences and not worth deducting stars on this product.
In regard to the different cup/button styles that come with the controller, I have kept the extras but found I liked the feel of the default ones that were already installed the best. So I can't speak as to how easy it may or may not be to interchange these.
As a controller alone, this product is definitely worth it. Don't hesitate if your're on the fence. I know there are other features and great tech inside the Pro controller, but in the end you need to ask yourself: Is the new HD Rumble and amiibo support worth another $45? Maybe it is for you. That's the big question here. But if you just want the controller itself, in my opinion, save some money and get one of these.
UPDATE: Writing this on 4/30/18, but been having issues with this controller essentially since after writing the initial review. I really only got to use this controller for Fire Emblem Warriors, and then I took some time away from my Switch. Now I'm finally ready to dive back in with Super Mario Odyssey and it's impossible to even USE this controller. The left analog stick is not being pressed but is constantly moving Mario and screen options either up or down. I've had issues like this before with wireless controllers, and unplugging them/plugging them back in while making sure nothing was pressed usually solved the problem. Not the case here. And this is WIRED. Sure, I saved some money on this compared to a pro controller, but what was the point if it only worked for one game? That's just ridiculous. Very disappointed in this product.
It has developed an issue where I can no longer recommend the controller. I ordered it from Amazon on 10/26/2017, and received it a few days later. It has already developed upward drift on the left analog stick... meaning that if you're playing Super Mario Odyssey, for example, it slowly makes Mario creep forward even if you don't have the controller in your hands. It also makes selecting items on screen a pain, as the cursor wants to drift upwards.
Now, I've been gaming a long time, and I've worn out my share of PlayStation and Xbox controllers. I understand that they go through a lot of abuse when they're used extensively... But it usually takes at least a year or a year and a half for them to develop this same problem under heavy use. I understand that this is a cheap, 3rd party wired controller, not an OEM product. But really? Less than two months? That's ridiculous, especially considering that I haven't been using exclusively this controller for my Switch. I've also been using the JoyCons.
This controller is comfortable and does look really awesome... However I didn't buy it to look at. I bought it to game with. And if it doesn't function correctly as a controller, then it is useless.
