Oivo are a company that specialise in peripherals for a number of consoles in the current gaming market.
Straight off the bat, I must be clear that this is an entry level VR device and in no way is a substitute for a real Virtual Reality device like the PSVR, Oculus or other such VR unit.
With that said if you have a Nintendo Switch and are looking to sample the wonderful and worthwhile, in my opinion, delights of VR then this simple set up could be for you.
The build of the device is relatively solid and is made of fabric and soft foam rubber. The headset enables the user to place the switch on the front end and the lenses along with the software do the work.
A very important point must be made moving forward, this VR headset has a limited number of games and platforms that support its use. Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda BOTW, Super Smash Bros Nintendo Labo & some videos on YouTube are your lot at the moment. It remains to be seen whether or not nintendo will continue to support this aspect of it's big game releases but I would be hopeful they do.
The head set itself is comfortable to use and the build quality is reasonable considering the price point. It's not thee most comfortable headset but is much lighter and the freedom you are given is greater than that of other VR units due to no wires being needed.
The performance in games such as Zelda BOTW took me by surprise as I didnt expect much for the low price tag. Dont get me wrong, it's not a superb high def experience but I did get a fair bit of enjoyment out of it.
Is this the type of headset you could play long gaming sessions with?
Short answer here is no, its comfortable upto a point but wearing anything on your face for more than an hour isn't really appealing to me. If you are looking to play BOTW for 2 hours plus I'd say that using the head set is not the best way to go.
For example when using the VR within zelda the screen size is reduced to a circular field of vision that shrinks when heavy movement is enacted. This, as far as I'm aware, is down to two things, one is processing power and the other is an attempt to avoid motion sickness. In regards to the later, I never had any problems with this unit and this is coming from someone who has had some pretty dodgy motion sickness experiences with PSVR (driveclub could easily be used as some sort of torture device haha).
As a novelty it works and especially for younger adults id say it is a portal for them to experience a very limited version of VR without the huge price tag other units have.
Advice: Buy but know that it is a limited experience with only a handful of games that support its use.
In summary - headset is great and seems like the best way to experience VR on the Switch.
First of all the headset from Oivo, the product came well packaged and is overall of a very decent build quality. It sits nicely on your head and can be adjusted from a couple of straps. It is made from a soft material as well so doesn't become too uncomfortable when the weight of the Switch is located within it.
With reference to the VR gaming experience, at this time the Nintendo Switch only has a few games available with VR compatibility & in this instance i used Super Smash Bros. Whilst ultimately a pointless VR experience, the headset performed admirably. The image was clear and responsive with minimal blurring. I still was experiencing a little in the way of motion sickness but believe this is down to my lack of VR use rather than the headset itself.
I need to be clear that this is NOT a PSVR or HTC Vive experience and as such is not priced that way, it is an entry level VR headset with some small support via Nintendo, it also remains to be seen whether they add compatibility to anymore of the games withing the Switches library!
In summary, for the money it is an excellent purchase and does the job well, if anything it could only get better if more games become VR enabled on the Switch!
The headset is light because of the foam material and the strap is adjustable. I wouldn’t say this is a high quality headset but it is a lot better than the Nintendo Switch licenced cardboard VR headset.
The following issues is not the fault of this product:
Not many supported VR application for the Switch or on the YouTube app. Only such titles as Super Smash Bros. Zelda BOTW & Super Mario Odyssey has in game options for VR.
The Switch home menu is not even VR supported, therefore you would have to navigate to the VR supported game handheld before you put the Switch in the VR headset to play with.
This product could be improved with some sort of lens adjustment. Otherwise it may be out of focus for you. On top of the not many VR support on the Switch, I don’t recommend not just this product but any VR product for the Switch.
Games such as Smash Bro’s are you really gonna use VR for long term instead a 55” TV. Even then you wouldn’t bring your VR headset in public as it adds bulks beside looking funny (maybe in another 50 years).
