'Ninja at First Sight' sat on my TBR list for ages. I was under the impression that I wouldn't connect with these two lovelies - Fiona Shepard and Greg Archer - but their 'beginning' ended up being my favourite read in the series (despite being a novella).
The setting was the late 90s at Iowa State University, centering mainly around dorm life.
Freshman and Audrey Hepburn lookalike, Fiona was quiet and an observer, not so much a joiner. She had experienced pain and hardship, yet was kind, smart and adorably quirky. Greg had already been in the American Marines, (even though he was British) and now the tall and athletic man was studying at the same college and living in the same building as Fiona. He was older, confident, a thinker and outspoken, but when he saw Fiona he realised she was his soulmate. I had a soft spot for Greg (he reminded me of my husband, right down to the speedy marriage proposal) and Fiona was a beautiful gem.
I was captured by Penny's writing, characters and plot - simply gorgeous. She continues to be one of the best story-tellers I've ever read.

Oh my lord!! I have a huge smile on my face, I just can't get rid of it, it first happened when I read my first Penny book Grin & Beard it and each and every book makes my heart swell, by smile is a permanent feature while I read her books, they are that good!. The Knitting in the City series, if at all possible just get better with every book! I fell inlove with Janie and Quinn and now, I'm head over heals for the whole knitting group.
I adore Fiona's character, I can identify with her character. She is an idividual, because of her past, she's not swayed to conform or bend to any social expectations, she has a wonderful outlook on life. Now, Greg..... Greg, Mr Swoonworthy. Greg is so, so gorgeous, hot, sexy, set your pants on fire kind of guy with his plum accent, take no prisoner attitude, it's all or nothing with him, I fell head over heels for Greg. I cannot wait to ready about Fiona & Greg in the next book and I'm go glad we got to see how they came together in the beginning! Thank you Penny!!! 5 star read. Oh, and get the audio, the narrator does an amazing job with Greg's accent!

I love Penny Reid's books generally but this one was spectacular. If you've read the other Knitting in the City books, then there are some references that make the book extra-special. If you haven't then read the book anyway because it is set approximately 14 years before the first Knitting in the City book.
The characters that Penny had created are brilliant. Fiona is in college, inexperienced but not naive, smart, ballsy and self-assured. Greg is hilarious, brutally honest, honourable and the type of guy you would love to know in real life. The book is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud in certain places (particularly during a certain conversation around burial plots) but more than that, it will make you wish that Happily Ever Ninja was out today.

I was gripped people, gripped!!! And I've already read some of those story before in Penny's book 'Scenes from the City'. I always enjoy Penny Reid books, so this is no different.
You start the Knitting in the City series with Fiona already married. So this story is set years earlier when she meets her 'now' husband Greg Archer. Their chemistry is instant, and it sizzles, yes sizzles!!! You can almost touch it, it's written so strong and clear.
From what we know of Fiona so far is she's wise, thoughtful, smart, advice giver of the knitting group. 18 year old Fiona is also thoughtful, wise and smart. Her view on the world is very mature (more so than my view of the world at 18) but it's believable.
Greg is . . . is hard to describe. I don't think I would ever want to meet him if he actually existed, he would tear me to shreds with his smart, sarcastic, droll words. But he's fascinating to read about and he obviously cares deeply for Fiona. Like I said chemistry that you could touch.
Not the funniest of Penny's books but that's not a bad thing and definitely not a downside, the humour in this story is subtle, which suits Fiona. In fact the general tone of this story is very different, muted. It's not high drama, there's no life threatening scenario, there's no massive conflict BUT don't mistake that for being boring. 100% NOT boring, as I said I was gripped, and I devoured the book in one sitting.
So if you are a fan of Penny Reid then this next instalment won't disappoint.

Penny Reid's writing is spectacularly entertaining, the humour is quirky and hilarious, and there is real meat on the bones of her stories. The characters are both unbelievable and credible, you will see a little of someone you know in these characters. Her stories cover a range of topics that might surprise you and have you Googling for more information. Warning: You may feel compelled to knit after reading her novels, and there's nothing wrong with that! I can't wait for the next book. Dear Penny, please write faster...

Fiona and Greg captured me from the very first moment they hit the page together.
I loved their banter and the quirkiness of their conversations. There is a wonderful chemistry between them and I can't wait to see what happens to them next!

What a delightful taste of the beginnings of the relationship between Fiona and Greg. I have fallen in love with them and will be patient as I await the rest of their story.
Once again Penny Reid has a truly delightful and funny knack of telling a romantic tale.

This series just gets better and better, and it was amazing from the beginning! Don't let the size of this book fool you. It is a prequel, a taster, if you like, of what is to come with Greg And Fiona's story, in January 2016. But this precious book is a real treasure. One I will pick up and read whenever I need a reminder of what real love is. Penny Reid has some sort of magic, I swear. She conjures up characters so real, you can hear their voices in your head. You can see them. You feel their emotions. You recognise those emotions. And oh, they are so beautifully portrayed. I wept. Not because it was sad, but because my heart was full. This is romance on a whole new level. I have loved everything Penny Reid has written to date. My favourite book and characters change on a daily basis, they are all so good! But if I could choose one book to offer a reader a taste of Penny Reid, this would be it. This one truly highlights her superior talent for writing smart romance. Just wait until January. Ms Reid will have our heads spinning when we meet Greg and Fiona again in Happily Ever Ninja. I want everyone to read this book!

DISCLAIMER: The following review was originally posted on my book blog in January, 2016.
This short prequel novella for Fiona and Greg's book is killing me. It's killing me because it makes me want the real Greg and Fiona story even more than I wanted to read it before. Luckily Unluckily for me I have less than three weeks left till it is being published. These three weeks are going to be torturous!
Greg Archer is downright dreamy and I predict that he's going to the top of my favourite Penny Reid heroes in a flash when I get to read the next book. Hell, he's already sharing the top-spot with Quinn and Drew, but I have high hopes for him to beat those two and be the best hero ever. Especially if I'm to believe the ARC readers and the sneaky little peek we had into their story in this preview. Their story is going to be awesomesauce.
I love how Fiona and Greg banter. I love how cute they are together. I love how Greg finds these opportunities to compliment Fiona to the furthest star and back. Hell, I just love them together. They're spectacular and I cannot wait for more!
The only complaint I have about this short story is the fact that it's ... you know, short.

Unsatisfying prequel novella

The ingredients were a little too rich for the actual story - she was a near-Olympic athlete & cancer survivor; he was the grandson of an earl and ex-marine. Over a term they get to know each other and fall in love. The end.
Well, actually the end of the trailer for the full-length story about their later life together. It all felt a little insubstantial. Well-written, but insubstantial.

I have to admit that I am a huge fan of Penny Reid's novels and have read all of the 'Knitting in the City' and 'Winston Brothers' series, but I will admit that I was apprehensive about Fiona's story and have put off reading it... Perhaps it's because I didn't feel that I knew as much about her character as I had with some of the other 'Knitting in the City' characters, or it could be that her story seems to be more grown up - I have to admit that her story being billed as a story about marriage did seem less appealing to begin with (I don't know why!)
However, saying all of this I have to admit that as soon as I started reading this it felt that I was finally properly introduced to the character of Fiona. Whereas in other stories she'd been nothing more than a bystander vaguely mentioned with little development (unlike someone like Elizabeth or Sandra who are arguably stronger characters and so as an audience we become more familiar with them) in this novella we learn a lot about her and she becomes endearing and it is clear why the other women in the 'Knitting in the City' books often look to her.
I can gladly admit that it was silly to be put-off by this story and character and should've known that Penny Reid would create engaging and endearing characters with fantastic plots and ideas! I haven't read Happily Ever Ninja yet, but that'll be next on my list!

Ninja at first sight is book #4.5 in the Knitting in the City Series.
I grabbed this book as an Amazon freebie and I’ve binge read the whole series back to back.
This is the prequel novella to Fiona and Greg’s full length book Happily Ever Ninja.
Honestly until Fiona’s revelations in Love Hacked I hadn’t given her character a great deal of thought. She was one of the characters that just blended into the background.
Well she’s centre stage now!!!
This book should be framed in a big pink heart and called the most adorably argumentative book ever!!
I slung back and forth between falling for Greg and wanting to slap him.
Fiona was adorably innocent yet not naive which was a lovely change.
This novella was the perfect introduction to these characters and I can’t wait to read the rest of their story.
Ninja at first sight gets 4 stars from me.
