From the manufacturer
Covering all angles, this powerful 16.7x wide-angle to super-telephoto zoom easily captures most scenes so you don’t have to change lenses. From group shots and vast landscapes to portrait and distant natural subjects, you can shoot sharp, colour-rich photos and video without compromise. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR is built to offer maximum flexibility and portability without sacrificing image quality, thanks to the sophisticated optical and mechanical design. By suppressing the open aperture at the maximum telephoto position to f/6.3, Nikon’s engineers were able to realise a more compact and lighter, result than the larger AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–5.6G ED VR.
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR
With incredible reach in a remarkably compact body, the powerful AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR lens is designed to cover every imaginable shooting situation. Crafted to draw good results from high-resolution DX-format D-SLRs and equipped with enhanced technology the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR lens is optimal for enthusiastic photographers. This truly versatile all-in-one lens is ideal when you want to travel light and still capture diverse perspectives. So for those keen on travel, amateur sports or wildlife photography, a compact ''walkabout'' lens like this is an optimal choice.
Providing high optical performance, the lens comprises 16 elements in 12 groups, in a design with three ED glass and three aspherical lens elements. The ED and aspherical elements work together to effectively manage the risk of aberrations that can occur with super-zoom lenses, resulting in images of high-resolution and superior contrast. For a soft rendering effect the iris diaphragm has seven rounded blades, producing high-quality natural backgrounds.
Smooth and Steady
Equipped with Nikon’s Vibration Reduction system, this super-zoom delivers clear, blur-free images, whether you’re taking a wide-angle group portrait in low light or zooming in to capture distant subjects. Designed to enable more stable handheld shooting, Nikon’s VR technology lets you shoot at slower shutter speeds, without the image-degrading blur that can be caused by camera shake. The optical VR system also stabilises the viewfinder image for more accurate autofocus acquisition and framing, even when shooting handheld at the super-telephoto end of the range.
Nikon''s AF-S technology is yet another reason why professional photographers like NIKKOR lenses. Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) converts travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that is accurate and super quiet. So for discrete shooting you can set up the shot in an instant and camera focusing won’t disturb sensitive subjects like wildlife.
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR lens was built with lasting durability and portability in mind. Weighing in at an economical 550 g, which is light for a lens with this kind of range, the handling is exceptional and optimal for photographers on the move. Allowing for a more compact design, Nikon''s Internal focus (IF) technology limits all the optical movement to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel enabling a closer focusing distance. With a weather-sealed mount protecting both the lens and camera from dust and water and a zoom-lock switch to prevent the lens from moving under its own weight during transportation, this lens really is an optimal travelling companion for your D-SLR.
Answering the demand for a powerful, all-in-one lens, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR is lightweight, compact, and ready to capture wonderfully diverse scenes with ease.
The actual focal length of 18-300 mm has an angle of view equivalent to that of a 27-450 mm lens in 35 mm format.

Update** I have now had this lens for a few months, and I am still more and more impressed with it. I have managed to take a few pictures that have now been rated in the top 50 trending on the National Geographic User Submitted Photos page. The capability and portability of this lens are just getting better and better. I am including some more photographs, now that I have had a chance to expand on it some.
I initially bought this lens specifically for walking around street photography use. But after just coming off a three day nature and landscape shoot with the 18-300, I'm thoroughly impressed. What stood out to me (other than obviously not having to keep changing lenses), was the fast accurate focusing, especially in low-light situations. The 18-300 was amazing in this category! There were many times I was sure the focusing would be off, but I was wrong. I was pleasantly surprised to see that all my images were (at the responsibility of the lens) razor-sharp.
Then there's the convenience. Concentrating on getting the shot, and not having to constantly change lenses IS everything it's cracked up to be. Although not my intentions, during the entire three days I never brought my 16-85 or 70-300 out of the bag. Didn't need to. The only other lens I used was my Nikon 10-24. Yes, the 18-300 is a tad slower at the longer length than my 70-300, but I never missed the small difference. And did I mention the light weight of the 18-300?
The only slight negative was a little lens creep. But the 18-300 has a lock for this if needed.
I have eight other Nikon lenses, and this lens is so good, this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review.
So, my recommendation: Don't listen to all the "holier-than-thou" critics on the Nikon forums that claim this lens is a waste of Nikon time. No, it's not a "professional lens" not a 2.8 and it doesn't cost thousands of dollars. But it's a damn great lens. You won't be disappointed. Needless to say, I certainly wasn't.
I replaced and sold my 18-200mm, and my 55-300mm for this one.
It is true, and I was a bit mystified, that this lens does not come with a lens bag or a lens hood. But on the other hand, the Nikon lens bags do nothing to protect the lens in any way. So I always buy my own. And as far as the lens hood goes, ken Rockwell recommends you leave it home anyways when using this lens.
I've taken a few shots and the images are impressive to my non-technical eyes. I believe, as my research concludes, that this lens is just as good if not better than the lens it replaces,
If my review was helpful, and I hope it was, please choose the yes option in the comments section below. Thank you. Richard
