This series is set in the years following Napoleon’s defeat and this book contains references to his adoption of the metric system of weights and measures. In England, at this time, there were many different “standards” and very little compliance.
This dilemma encourages mathematically minded, single lady, Diana Middleton to go underground to try and fix the whole mess. She feels the only way forward is to remain unseen in the ton and go about her work in secret. Her motto is that if you see something that needs fixing, then fix it.
The Duke of Colehaven has spent years trying to overcome his past as the poor relation that inherits the Dukedom. He wants to make things better for everyone and sits on many parliamentary committees trying to get his voice heard.
They meet, find out they are very attached to each other, but have trouble giving up their ideas on how to go about their individual crusades. They are both very intelligent and their dialogue is witty and challenging. The supporting cast of sisters, cousins and friends add interest, humour and potential for future stories.
This is a great start to a new series or a wonderful book to read on its own.
I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Principled and on the quest to make a difference to the lifes of the ordinary man, Diana sacrifices friends for anonymity, to covertly become herself in the guise of Mrs Peabody. While Cole sets out to continue his 10 year winning streak, of winning wagers, to take on the challenge of marrying his friend's ward and cousin off to the man of her dreams. The only stickler is Diana doesn't intend to marry - ever - stubbornly determined not to jeopardise her freedom or moral stance and refuses to be swayed from the matter. But does remaining a spinster mean she has to forgo passion and alluring desire? I think not.
A well crafted tale with engagingly witty characters that have the power to make you laugh, sigh, cry and tingle with want. Who would of thought the subject of uniforming weighs and measures could be so enticing or such good fun!!!
Moving straight on to book 2 - this world and its vivacious inhabitants are not one I'm willing to give up just yet!!
The Duke of Colehaven is on a 10 year winning streak, co proprieter of the Wicked Dukes he is challenged by Thaddeus to find his ward a husband by the end of the season.
When the Duke of Colehaven meets Miss Middleton for the first time blending into the wallpaper at a soiree he realises he may have bitten off more than he can chew.
Another great story in the Wicked Dukes series, its another book where the heroine is not a simpering Miss waiting for a man to complete her but someone who is trying to overthrow the shackles of the ton and make use of her intellect for good.
The characters are boring and the descriptions quite light throughout.
The plot is unremarkable and the main characters not arresting at all. While it didn't put me to sleep (not much does), it was really lacklustre and failed to hold my attention. I put it down lots of times which I don't normally do.
This isn't an author for me.
