Product Description

Though he’s still tormented by his brother’s murder and the accident that ended his career, ex-homicide detective Liam Dempsey is trying to move on. His girlfriend and their adopted son are the best things that ever happened to him—and being a police liaison is the next best thing to being back on the force. But when an old friend asks for his help, Liam is thrust into a harrowing investigation that reawakens his darkest personal demons.

A politician has been violently attacked, and his wife is kidnapped for ransom. But as police mobilize to track the victim and trap her abductor, the case takes a chilling turn from extortion to grisly murder. Whoever snatched Valerie Farrow wants blood and money—and they’re brutally collecting.

Working with, and against, the police, Liam is forced to dig deep to expose the ugly truth—even if it means digging his own grave in the process.

4.0 out of 5 stars Standard but very enjoyable police procedural 29 August 2016
By Steven Meisel - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This is a standard police procedural, replete with the requisite retired cop who can't stay retired, the local cops who are a mixture of good cop and buffoon, and scrapes that defy common sense. Yet this bizarre story line somehow works. I found The Night is Deep quite engaging with enough twists and turns to keep the reader fooled until at least 75% of the way in. The protagonist is likable enough, the supporting cast realistic enough to offset the predictably unrealistic story line. There are many such entries in this genre; while some are outstanding and many are a waste of time, The Night is Deep is most certainly worth a read for anyone who enjoys police procedurals.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Killer" addition to the Liam Dempsey series 19 December 2016
By Cheryl Stout - Published on

I know, I know...bad title but I just couldn't help myself. I have been reading a few of author Joe Hart's books over the last few days and he hasn't disappointed me yet.

I finished THE RIVER IS DARK - the first book in this series - yesterday. I am really liking Liam Dempsey's character. If you haven't read the first book, you should. This book could be read as a standalone, I suppose, but you'll enjoy it much more if you read book one first.

SPOILER ALERT (don't read any further if you haven't read book one and plan to)

Liam is happily settled in a farmhouse outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota with Dani and Eric (from book one). He is a police consultant working on cold cases in his spare time. Dani is able to devote herself to her art full time and Eric is recovering slowly but surely from the death of his parents. Things are flowing nicely and then Liam gets a call out of the blue from an old friend of his - whose wife has been kidnapped - and Liam goes to offer his help.

I love the life the author breathes into his characters and the fast, urgent pace of his books. I thought I was so smart and had all the twists figured out in this story. I didn't.

If you like mysteries, thrillers, character-driven prose, give Joe Hart's books a chance. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing storytelling! 15 August 2016

This has to be my favourite novel so far by Joe Hart! I couldn't put it down! I was hooked from the beginning and was on the edge of my seat till I read the last sentence. Joe is such a talented writer. He is able to create a world so real that you feel like you are right there with the characters. I can't wait to see where he takes us next!
5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Surprises 13 March 2017

Liam Dempsey used to work for the Minneapolis police department, the police work is still with him. One day he gets a call from a friend of his who's wife has been kidnapped. Liam drives to Owen's to be with him, and ends up helping with the case. There are lots of twists and turns in this book and it came as a big surprise to me as to who the kidnapper was. This is an excellent book.

This was a great addition to the Liam Dempsey books. I hope there are more in this series. Liam gets a call from an old friend whose wife has gone missing and he goes to help solve the case and find the friends wife. The case becomes complicated very quickly and Liam (of course) bumps heads with local law enforcement. This was a fun, action packed story with great characters.
